Modifications are being implemented by the NCAA regarding the schedule for its transfer portal, alongside adjustments to the period allotted for players to transfer following a change in coaching staff.
The NCAA revealed on Tuesday its decision to reduce the transfer window post-coaching changes from 30 days to 15 days, while also modifying the timing of this window. According to the Division I Administrative Committee, the transfer portal is slated to become accessible once a school appoints its subsequent head coach.
Furthermore, the NCAA formally announced its approval for the initiation of a singular 15-day transfer portal window, commencing on Jan. 2. This single window supersedes the previous system, which provided players with two opportunities to enter the transfer portal. Prior to the 2025 season, players had the option to transfer both at the conclusion of the season and during the spring period.
Currently, players are granted 30 days to register their names in the transfer portal immediately following the dismissal of their head coach. Players from institutions such as UCLA, Virginia Tech, and Oklahoma State are presently engaged in their respective 30-day transfer windows, triggered by coaching changes at each of these universities. Given that all three of these schools terminated their coaches’ contracts with fewer than four games remaining in the current season, players at each institution have the possibility of redshirting for the remainder of the 2025 season upon entering the transfer portal.

This possibility would be eliminated under the proposed regulation if it secures official approval on Wednesday. Should a school dismiss a coach after Week 4 but delay the appointment of a permanent replacement until after the season’s conclusion, the 15-day portal will activate on the date the new coach’s hiring is officially confirmed.
