New York Invader’s Miss Disco Stakes Bid

A group of eight three-year-old fillies, each striving for victory, are set to compete over seven furlongs on the Colonial Downs dirt surface in Saturday’s $125,000 Miss Disco Stakes, a prominent event during the opening weekend of Colonial’s 2025 racing season.

An abundance of early speed doesn’t appear evident among the Miss Disco contenders. This could benefit #4 Mila Candy, a New York shipper who has repeatedly showcased tactical speed. She’s remained within close striking distance of the pace in all three of her races, including a victory in an Aqueduct maiden special weight, earning a 94 Brisnet speed figure, the highest in the Miss Disco field.

Mila Candy did not perform quite as well in the Jersey Girl Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in her most recent start. After tracking just a length behind the leader for half a mile, she weakened, finishing fifth, five lengths behind the winner. However, she still achieved a respectable speed figure despite the defeat.

While the Jersey Girl was open to all 3-year-old fillies, the Miss Disco is limited to fillies who are either Virginia/Maryland-bred or Virginia/Maryland-sired. This suggests a slightly less challenging field, potentially giving Mila Candy a better opportunity to excel in her second stakes attempt. The addition of blinkers for the first time is also noteworthy, as they could enhance Mila Candy’s early speed, positioning her ideally to either set or press a moderate pace.

For a simple wagering approach, a win bet on Mila Candy could be considered. Alternatively, for a larger investment with the potential for a greater return, an exacta could be constructed using #1 Conquerthosewecan and #7 Safe Trust for the second-place position.

Conquerthosewecan is entering this race with two consecutive sprint victories, most recently a $62,500 allowance-optional claiming race at Laurel Park. That race was her first start since November. Given that race, improvement is expected in this second start of the year.

Safe Trust has struggled in recent races, both sprinting on turf and running longer distances on dirt. However, her form in dirt sprints is encouraging. In April, she won a $75,000 allowance-optional claimer at Laurel by three lengths, earning a 91 Brisnet speed rating.
