Newcastle Signs Amanaki Mafi Amid Spending Spree

The Newcastle Falcons have secured the services of Japanese international number eight, Amanaki Mafi, marking their fifth acquisition in preparation for the upcoming season. Mafi has committed to a one-year agreement, following his four-year tenure with the Japanese team, Canon Eagles.

Mafi, born in Tonga and currently 35 years old, tallied 19 tries across 50 games for the Canon Eagles. He is set to join George McGuigan, Freddie Clarke, Jamie Hodgson, and Ethan Grayson within Steve Diamond’s squad.

Celebrated for his formidable tackles and ability to offload, the powerful back-rower boasts 29 international appearances for the Brave Blossoms. He also participated as a substitute in their noteworthy 2015 Rugby World Cup victory against South Africa, held in Brighton.

This will be Mafi’s second experience in the Premiership, having previously played for Bath. During his time there, he made seven appearances and scored four tries. His playing history also includes stints with the Melbourne Rebels and the Japanese team, Sunwolves.

Formerly a Tonga under-20s international with a height of 6 feet 2 inches and a weight of 117kg, Mafi relocated to Japan for his university studies. He distinguished himself with the NTT Shining Arcs over five seasons, eventually gaining international recognition.

Steve Diamond, the Falcons’ director of rugby, is still actively pursuing further signings and conveys his enthusiasm for the potential influence of his latest recruit.

“Amanaki is a strong ball carrier known for his impressive footwork and offloading capabilities, qualities that are sure to excite our supporters,” Diamond stated.

“His contributions are impactful in both offensive and defensive plays, and he has the ability to involve others in the game. I consider this a very important signing for our team.”

Mafi has expressed his commitment to reciprocate Diamond’s confidence in providing him with the chance to join the North East-based team at this stage of his career.

“It is truly an honor to become part of a club with the reputation of the Newcastle Falcons. I am thankful for this opportunity and enthusiastic about what the future holds. I am prepared to dedicate myself, learn, and contribute in any way possible to support the team,” he added.
