NFL Week 2: Cowboys-Giants, News, Injuries, Live Updates

[Second Sunday schedule | NFL Second Sunday live updates]

The Second Sunday early contests are packed with nine matchups, featuring Patrick Mahomes’s initial visit to Philadelphia as the Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback.

While that began promisingly for him — they established a 13-3 advantage early on, partly due to a 29-yard scoring pass to Skyy Moore in the second quarter — the Eagles eventually mounted a comeback to make it competitive. Jalen Hurts connected with DeVonta Smith for a 10-yard touchdown just before the break, and then Kenneth Gainwell ripped off a 30-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter to give the Eagles their first lead of the afternoon. Though it’s only Second Sunday of the season, the game holds considerable NFC East implications, as the loser will be 0-2 within the division.

Outside of Philadelphia, there’s also Aaron Glenn’s first return to New Orleans as Atlanta’s head coach. The Saints have been dominant in this series lately, winning five of the last six encounters. Both teams are hoping to avoid an 0-2 start and the bottom spot in the NFC South this week.

The other early afternoon games include Kansas City at Philadelphia, Atlanta at New Orleans, New England at Tampa Bay, San Francisco at Green Bay, Los Angeles [Chargers] at Minnesota, Denver at New York [Giants], Houston at Indianapolis, and Carolina at Las Vegas.

Among the top news items so far in the 1 p.m. game slate is an injury to Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, who exited Second Sunday’s contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars with what the team announced as a toe injury. Burrow took a sack for a five-yard loss from Jaguars DT Arik Armstead and was down for a bit as his ankle was examined in the second quarter.

Burrow left the field and was helped to the locker room, limping heavily, with the assistance of two trainers. He was replaced by backup quarterback Jake Browning. The team officially deemed Burrow as questionable to return ahead of the third quarter, and Browning started at quarterback in the second half.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen also had an injury scare this week, exiting with a nose injury and being replaced briefly by backup Mitch Trubisky. He returned to the lineup several plays later, though, after being tended to on the sideline.
