NFL Week 2: Purdy Doubtful with Shoulder and Toe Injuries

The 2025 NFL schedule is progressing swiftly, with Week 2 rapidly approaching. As is typical each week, physical ailments are expected to significantly influence the outcomes of the second week of the regular games, notably impacting the San Francisco 49ers, who are enduring persistent setbacks, particularly concerning their quarterback, Brock Purdy.

With the majority of teams resuming practices on Wednesday, now is an opportune moment to assess the preliminary injury reports. We’ll examine these reports below and also provide a concluding overview and status assessment for Thursday’s high-profile contest between the Washington Commanders and the Green Bay Packers.

Washington enters Week 2 with a generally positive health status, with only a couple of athletes marked with concerns. Although both Way and Wise participated partially in Wednesday’s drills, Wise engaged fully on Monday and Tuesday. While this might suggest a decline in Wise’s condition, the Commanders conducted walkthroughs at the week’s start, making those initial designations estimations.

Both Tom and Banks sustained their injuries during the opening match against Detroit. They were both listed as inactive in practices this week, but head coach Matt LaFleur mentioned that their availability would be determined closer to the game.

Jacksonville included just a handful of athletes in their initial report, with a couple of them, offensive linemen Cole Van Lanen (shoulder) and Anton Harrison (back), participating fully. The sole absentee was fellow lineman Wyatt Milum (knee), while corner Montaric Brown (ankle) had limited participation.

The Bengals had an even more concise injury report, with offensive tackle Amarius Mims (ankle) being the only athlete with limited involvement. Long snapper William Wagner (hamstring) was mentioned but engaged fully in training.

The Giants began the practice week without defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence, but his absence wasn’t due to physical issues. Linebacker Micah McFadden (foot), receiver Wan’Dale Robinson (ankle), and offensive tackle Andrew Thomas (foot) didn’t train because of injuries. Linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (calf) and receiver Malik Nabers (back) had limited involvement.

Dallas started the week with a minimal injury report, with corner DaRon Bland (foot) as the only athlete not participating in practices. Bland’s foot injury is concerning, given that he was sidelined for several games due to a stress fracture in 2024. Safety Malik Hooker (foot) participated partially.

The Lions were missing linebacker Jack Campbell (ankle) and offensive tackle Taylor Decker (shoulder) on Wednesday, while linebacker Trevor Nowaske (elbow) and running back Sione Vaki (hamstring) had restricted participation.

The Tennessee Titans were without defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat (ankle), safety Quandre Diggs (hand), right tackle JC Latham (hip) and running back Kalel Mullings (ankle) on Wednesday. Cornerback L’Jarius Sneed (knee), safety Kevin Winston Jr. (hamstring) and edge rusher Arden Key (pectoral) were all limited.

The Los Angeles Rams saw several key players miss Wednesday’s practice: wide receiver Davante Adams (veteran rest day), offensive lineman Steve Avila (ankle), offensive lineman Kevin Dotson (ankle), tight end Colby Parkinson (shoulder) and offensive lineman Rob Havenstein (ankle). Tight end Davis Allen (knee) was the only player with limited participation.

New England remains without Christian Gonzalez, the All-Pro corner, who missed Week 1, and also didn’t practice on Wednesday because of a recurring hamstring issue. The Patriots were also without linebacker Harold Landry III (foot), offensive tackle Morgan Moses (foot), and defensive end Keion White (illness). Linebackers Christian Ellis (shoulder) and Marte Mapu (neck) had limited participation, along with receiver Kayshon Boutte (shoulder).

Miami had a number of players absent from practice on Wednesday, including notable players like tight end Darren Waller (hip), running back Jaylen Wright (knee), offensive lineman Austin Jackson (toe). Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle (shoulder) and safety Ashtyn Davis (knee) were both limited.

The injury issues continue to plague the 49ers. This time, it’s Brock Purdy. San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Wednesday that the quarterback is unlikely to play on Sunday because of injuries to his toe and left shoulder. Shanahan suggested this could mean several weeks of absence. If Purdy is indeed ruled out, Mac Jones would likely start Week 2 against New Orleans.

The Saints, meanwhile, were without Julian Blackmon (shoulder), Taliese Fuaga (knee), Trevor Penning (toe), and Chase Young (calf) as the week’s training began. Velus Jones Jr. (knee) and Zach Wood (elbow) had limited participation.

Running back James Cook (hamstring) had limited involvement as the week began for Buffalo, along with corner Brandon Codrington (knee), tight end Dawson Knox (hip), defensive end Greg Rousseau (knee), and corner Tre’Davious White (groin). Linebacker Shaq Thompson (hamstring, hand) and corner Taron Johnson (quad) did not practice.

New York was missing tight end Mason Taylor (ankle), running back Kene Nwangwu (hamstring), and defensive lineman Jay Tufele (illness) on Wednesday. The team also noted that corner Michael Carter II (shoulder), linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball (calf), and offensive lineman Chukwuma Okorafor (hand) had limited participation.

The Pittsburgh Steelers had a substantial list of key defensive players who didn’t practice on Wednesday: edge rusher T.J. Watt (veteran rest day), defensive tackle Derrick Harmon (knee), cornerback Joey Porter Jr. (hamstring) and safety DeShon Elliott (knee). Several other key defenders had limited involvement: defensive tackle Cameron Heyward (veteran rest day) and linebacker Nick Herbig (hamstring).

The Seattle Seahawks had only two players not participating in Wednesday’s practice: cornerback Devon Witherspoon (knee) and safety Nick Emmanwori (ankle). Three key defenders were limited: defensive tackle Jarran Reed (back), safety Julian Love (groin) and linebacker Ernest Jones (shoulder).

Browns rookie running back Quinshon Judkins was absent from practice on Wednesday as he was meeting with league officials in New York as part of the NFL’s investigation into potential violations under the personal conduct policy. Apart from that, everyone else was present, but the team did note offensive tackle Joel Bitonio (not injury related), offensive tackle Jack Conklin (eye, elbow), defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. (knee), offensive tackle Dawand Jones (knee), and corner Denzel Ward (shoulder, Achilles) as limited.

Baltimore listed tight end Isaiah Likely (foot), defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike (ankle), and fullback Patrick Ricard (calf) as non-participants on Wednesday. Corner Jaire Alexander (knee) had limited participation.

Colts cornerbacks Charvarius Ward (concussion) and Jaylon Jones (hamstring) did not practice on Wednesday, while running back Tyler Goodson (elbow) and defensive end Laiatu Latu (hamstring) had limited participation.

The Broncos were without linebacker Dre Greenlaw (quad), defensive lineman John Franklin-Meyers (knee) and tight end Nate Adkins (ankle) on Wednesday. Tight end Evan Engram (calf) was Denver’s only limited practice participant.

The Carolina Panthers had a relatively minor injury report on Wednesday: defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton (hamstring) was the only player who didn’t practice. Offensive tackle Ikem Ekwonu (illness), edge rusher Patrick Jones II (ankle) and wide receiver Hunter Renfrow (ribs) were the only three players limited

Just a handful of players didn’t practice on Wednesday for the Arizona Cardinals: offensive lineman Kelvin Beachum (veteran rest day), tight end Tip Reiman (foot) and inside linebacker Cody Simon (concussion). Punter Blake Gillikin (back) and offensive lineman Will Hernandez (knee) were the only ones limited.

Receivers Xavier Worthy (shoulder) and Jalen Royals (knee) did not practice on Wednesday. Kansas City also listed guard Trey Smith (knee, illness) and linebacker Drue Tranquill (knee) as limited.

The Philadelphia Eagles were without a few players in practice on Wednesday: tight end Dallas Goedert (knee), backup quarterback Tanner McKee (right thumb) and backup running back Will Shipley (oblique). Guard Landon Dickerson (back) and edge rusher Jalyx Hunt (hip) were limited.

The Atlanta Falcons had a couple of notable players not practice on Wednesday in safety Jordan Fuller (knee) and wide receiver Jamal Agnew (groin). Four players were limited for Atlanta: wide receiver Darnell Mooney (shoulder), wide receiver Drake London (shoulder), edge rusher James Pearce Jr. (shoulder) and safety DeMarcco Hellams (hamstring).

After playing on “Monday Night Football” in Week 1, the Minnesota Vikings had six players not practice on Wednesday: linebacker Blake Cashman (hamstring), running back Ty Chandler (knee), center Ryan Kelly (toe), tight end Josh Oliver (ankle), edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel (concussion) and cornerback Jeff Okudah (concussion). However, only two players were limited: safety Harrison Smith (illness) and wide receiver Myles Price (knee). Left tackle Christian Darrisaw (knee), who missed Week 1, practiced fully on Wednesday.
