NFL Week 9: Murray Update, McCarthy Returns, Purdy Doubt, Nacua Ready?

The ninth week of the 2025 NFL season is expected to witness the return of several prominent players. 

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray (foot) might be available to play for the Cardinals against the Dallas Cowboys on “Monday Night Football.” It is confirmed that Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy (ankle), Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young (ankle), and Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua (ankle) will be back in action for their respective teams in Week 9 after each did not receive a game status designation. 

Below are the final injury reports for all teams competing on Sunday, along with the preliminary reports for Arizona and Dallas as they prepare for “Monday Night Football.”

Following his absence in Week 8 against the Bills due to an ankle injury, Panthers quarterback Bryce Young participated fully in practice each day this week, indicating his return to the starting lineup without a game status as Week 9 begins. His return is particularly significant, given veteran backup Andy Dalton’s questionable status with a right thumb injury. The situation regarding Young’s offensive line is less encouraging, with center Cade Mays (knee, ankle) ruled out and right tackle Taylor Moton (knee) listed as questionable. 

Green Bay will be missing linebacker Nick Niemann (pectoral), defensive lineman Lukas Van Ness (foot), and wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks (calf). Kicker Brandon McManus (right quad) is listed as questionable after converting two of his four field goal attempts in Week 8 against the Steelers on “Sunday Night Football,” marking his first game action since Week 4. Backup kicker Lucas Havrisik has been perfect, making all four of his field goal attempts, including a franchise-record 61-yarder during a Week 7 victory against the Cardinals. Linebacker Quay Walker (calf) is questionable after participating on a limited basis in practice on both Thursday and Friday.

Chicago will be without four players, including multiple key offensive players. Wide receiver Luther Burden III (concussion) and running backs D’Andre Swift (groin) and Roschon Johnson (back) have all been ruled out after not participating in practice this week. The same applies to defensive lineman Dominique Robinson (ankle). Linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga (knee) is listed as questionable.

The Bengals have listed quarterback Joe Flacco (right shoulder) as questionable after he only participated in one practice this week, managing a limited session on Thursday. Defensive end Trey Hendrickson (hip), linebacker Logan Wilson (calf), and cornerback Marco Wilson (hamstring) are all doubtful after being absent from practice throughout the week.

Locke (neck) had limited participation on Wednesday and Thursday, but his absence on Friday resulted in his being ruled out for Week 9. For Houston, cornerback Alijah Huzzie (knee) is out. Tight end Dalton Schultz (knee/shoulder), defensive end Dylan Horton (knee), and defensive end Denico Autry (knee) are all questionable, as is fullback Jakob Johnson (hamstring).

The Steelers have announced that wide receiver Scotty Miller (finger), safety Jabrill Peppers (quadriceps), and cornerback Cory Trice (hamstring/knee) will not be playing on Sunday.

Colts defensive end Samson Ebukam (knee) is slated to miss his second consecutive game, having not participated in practice this week. Defensive tackle Grover Stewart (foot) is questionable for Sunday’s game, having practiced for the first time this week on Friday as a full participant.

The Lions will be without safety Kerby Joseph (knee) and running back Craig Reynolds (hamstring), both of whom did not practice this week. Linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez (knee) has also been ruled out after being limited each day. Left tackle Taylor Decker (shoulder/rest) is questionable after sitting out Friday, following a full practice on Thursday. Cornerback Avonte Maddox (hamstring), running back Sione Vaki (ankle), and safety Daniel Thomas (forearm) are also questionable, having been limited throughout the week.

The 49ers will be starting Mac Jones at quarterback this week against the Giants because Brock Purdy (toe) is still questionable, recovering from turf toe. Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall (knee), edge rushers Bryce Huff and Yetur Gross-Matos, and center Jake Brendel are all sidelined this week. Linebacker Dee Winters (knee) is questionable after his practice participation was limited on Thursday and Friday.

Cornerbacks Paulson Adebo (knee), Cordale Flott (concussion), and Art Green, in addition to defensive lineman Chauncey Golston (neck), have all been ruled out due to their absence from practice this week. Tight end Daniel Bellinger (neck) and offensive tackle Jermaine Eluemunor (pec) are both listed as doubtful, having not practiced all week. Safety Jevon Holland (knee) is questionable after limited participation all week, and CB Rico Payton (groin) is questionable after participating fully in practice throughout the week.

The Jaguars have ruled out wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter (knee) after he sustained a non-contact injury during practice on Thursday. Jacksonville has also ruled out wide receiver Tim Patrick (groin), safety Eric Murray (neck), and tight end Quintin Morris (groin). Linebacker Devin Lloyd, who is the NFL’s current interception leader with four, is questionable to return in Week 9 after being sidelined since Week 7 due to a calf issue. Lloyd has practiced on a limited basis throughout the week. 

Las Vegas has only listed two players with game statuses, ruling out backup quarterback Aidan O’Connell (right wrist) and safety Lonnie Johnson (fibula).

Kansas City will be without offensive tackle Josh Simmons (personal) and running back Isiah Pacheco (knee), as neither participated in practice this week. Offensive lineman Jaylon Moore (illness) was added to the injury report on Friday after not practicing due to an illness.  

The Bills held receiver Josh Palmer (knee, ankle) and defensive tackle DaQuan Jones (calf) out of practice all week, resulting in their being ruled out. Outside linebacker Shaq Thompson (hamstring) has also been ruled out after being absent from practice on Thursday and Friday. Cornerback Taron Johnson (groin) was a late addition to the injury report after participating in a limited practice session on Friday.

Guard Christian Hayes (pectoral) was not activated from injured reserve despite participating fully in practice throughout the week, and wide receiver Jake Bobo (Achilles) was ruled out after missing practice on Friday. Wide receiver Cooper Kupp (heel/hamstring) is now questionable after missing practice on Friday, and defensive tackle Jarran Reed (wrist) is questionable after participating in practice on Friday for the first time this week. 

Coach Dan Quinn informed reporters that wide receiver Terry McLaurin will be absent this week due to a quad injury. As a result, McLaurin did not practice. Defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton (ankle), tight end John Bates (ankle), and offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil (hamstring) are all listed as questionable after limited participation in practice on Friday. 

Arizona Cardinals at Dallas Cowboys (-3) (Monday)

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray (foot) participated on a limited basis for the second consecutive day on Friday, alongside first-round rookie defensive tackle Walter Nolen. Murray may be available to play after being sidelined for the last two games with a foot sprain. 

The Cowboys were without safety Donovan Wilson (elbow/shoulder) for the second consecutive day during Friday’s walkthrough. The team is optimistic that he may return to the lineup in Week 9.
