Reports indicate the National Football League concluded that Dave Merritt, the defensive backs coach for the Kansas City Chiefs, did not breach the organization’s personal conduct regulations after an arrest for domestic battery occurred during the off-season, as reported by Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Consequently, Merritt is not anticipated to receive any penalties from the NFL.
The league initiated an inquiry into the matter after Merritt, who is 54 years old, was apprehended and accused of domestic battery in the month of April. Back then, the district attorney’s department for the county submitted a formal accusation claiming Merritt “illegally, intentionally, or carelessly inflicted physical injury” upon one of his daughters. Merritt is a father to five children, with two of them being daughters.
During the subsequent month, the allegations against Merritt were dropped, allowing for potential refiling. Merritt’s legal representative stated that the prosecutor’s office thoroughly reviewed the circumstances before opting to withdraw the accusations.
Despite Merritt no longer being embroiled in a legal predicament, he remained susceptible to penalties from the National Football League. The organization possesses the authority to sanction athletes or coaching staff even when the legal framework chooses not to prosecute, or formally discontinues, charges. Should the NFL ascertain that an individual player or coach acted in a detrimental manner, punitive measures may still be imposed. Such action will not be taken in this specific scenario.
Merritt has held the position of defensive backs coach for the Chiefs since the start of the 2019 season. Before this role, Merritt dedicated fourteen years to working with the New York Giants. His tenure with that squad spanned from the year 2004 through 2017. Merritt was employed by the Arizona Cardinals for the 2018 season prior to his move to the Chiefs the subsequent year.
Throughout his career, Merritt has participated in interviews for a minimum of one role as a defensive coordinator, but he has never actually occupied that particular position.
