Nong-O on KOing Rodtang: “I’ll take the chance.”

Former ruler of the bantamweight division, Nong-O Hama, is staying true to his knockout mindset, even as he prepares to face one of combat sports’ toughest competitors. The 38-year-old Thai legend understands that Rodtang Jitmuangnon’s famous ability to absorb punishment presents a unique hurdle, but his history of capitalizing on weaknesses gives him confidence.

Nong-O will battle Rodtang for the unclaimed ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Title at ONE 173 on Sunday, November 16, at Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan. The former ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion is aiming for championships in two divisions against his 28-year-old countryman, who was stripped of his flyweight title in November 2024 for failing to make weight.

Rodtang’s resilience is beyond typical toughness, displayed over 300+ professional bouts. His strong jaw is well-known, taking hits that defeat other fighters while he keeps moving forward. The Thai superstar shrugs off strikes that would put others in the hospital, developing an image of being unbeatable in ONE Championship.

However, Nong-O sees more than just a tough fighter. The experienced fighter knows that Rodtang’s best asset is not his chin or strength, but the clever strategy behind his attacks. His quick destruction of Takeru Segawa at ONE 172 showed a technical skill that goes against his aggressive reputation.

“Rodtang is a strong fighter. He is tough. Some might see him just as an attacking fighter. For me, Rodtang has a very high fight IQ, and that is a threat. I think he is a smart fighter who can make adjustments,” he said.

“His biggest weapon is his fists. Those powerful fists can knock people out. He has great skills, and he can excite the audience.”

Nong-O suggests being a father has given Rodtang more drive

Nong-O Hama plans a careful attack, but knows how hard it will be to defeat Rodtang Jitmuangnon. The veteran prefers winning by points, but he will take chances for exciting knockouts. Years of learning different striking techniques give him the tools to take advantage of any openings.

Quick choices will decide the winner in what Nong-O describes as a risky chess match. The former bantamweight champion says he sees no real flaws in Rodtang’s power, fitness, intelligence, or skills. Because of this, their fight will be a battle of wits testing their timing.

Becoming fathers has changed what motivates both fighters beyond just winning titles. Rodtang’s son, Zlatan, was born in July 2025, giving him a deeper reason to fight for the title. Nong-O understands this well, as he is raising his own two sons and expects “The Iron Man” to be even more dangerous as he tries to be a good example for his son.

“It will be very difficult to get a knockout in this fight. So, I would like to win by points. But if there is a good chance, I will definitely try for the knockout because I have practiced many different strikes. Knocking out Rodtang will be hard, but if I get the chance, I will try to do it,” he said.

“A father wants to do his best to show his child that he is capable. So, that could be a factor. Rodtang is now a father. I am a father. So, I understand.”
