In her initial match after claiming the women’s singles championship at Wimbledon, Czech player Linda Noskova suffered a defeat.
In Toronto, the sixth-seeded athlete fell 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 to Caty McNally of the United States. Despite establishing a commanding 5-1 advantage in the first set and holding two set points during the eighth game, Noskova ultimately crumbled.
Up next for McNally in the round of 32 is Alexandra Eala, who made history on Monday by winning the Washington Open to secure the first WTA singles crown for the Philippines. Eala secured her spot by defeating American Alycia Parks in a three-set match.
On the men’s side, primary seed Alexander Zverev was also defeated in his first appearance post-Wimbledon, where he previously fell to Jannik Sinner in the championship match. The third-ranked player in the world was bested by Tallon Griekspoor with a scoreline of 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 6-4.
In other action, men’s number four seed Daniil Medvedev experienced a surprise departure of his own against a Dutch rival, falling in straight sets to Botic van de Zandschulp, who is ranked 70th in the world.
Meanwhile, the second, third, and fourth seeds—Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula, and Coco Gauff—each progressed to the third round, with Rybakina enduring a grueling match of over two and a half hours to defeat Daria Kasatkina 6-3 5-7 6-4.
