With the transfer deadline looming, Newcastle United must make a crucial roster choice as one of their most tenured team members draws growing attention from rival Premier League clubs.
Experienced wide player Jacob Murphy was previously linked with a move away earlier in the transfer window, and Nottingham Forest has now surfaced as his likely landing spot.
Alex Crook of talkSPORT reports that Forest is making a determined effort to secure the 31-year-old’s signature before the market shuts on Tuesday.
“#NFFC are making a strong push for Jacob Murphy prior to the deadline,” Crook shared. “#NUFC may be prepared to greenlight a departure for Murphy, who has entered the last 12 months of his deal at St James’ Park.”
This marks a major step forward from the initial updates provided by The Telegraph’s John Percy. Last week, Percy stated that Forest boss Oliver Glasner sought greater depth on the right flank, highlighting Murphy as one of three potential targets.
Shortly after, GIVEMESPORT indicated that Forest was actively negotiating a move for Murphy, raising the likelihood of a last-minute transfer.
Despite the immense wealth of the Public Investment Fund (PIF), selling Murphy makes clear economic sense for Newcastle if a reasonable offer arrives, given that he is in his final year and risks leaving on a free transfer next year.
On the other hand, parting ways with Murphy carries substantial danger. Having represented the club since 2017, the winger enjoyed a brilliant 2024-25 season with eight goals and 12 assists, and crucially, he remains the only genuine alternative to Anthony Elanga on the right flank at present.
While Crook stopped short of confirming a formal bid or Newcastle’s agreement to the transfer, his claim that the Magpies might approve the move indicates this pursuit is far more progressed than simple interest from Forest.
