Achieving a spot in elite hockey history failed to disturb Evan Bouchard’s composure.
The prominent Edmonton Oilers blueliner netted his inaugural hat trick and provided three helpers on Saturday, driving his squad to a 6-5 victory against the visiting Washington Capitals.
In his 400th career regular-season match, Bouchard emerged as only the fourth defender in National Hockey League annals to register three goals and three helpers in a single contest. The distinguished company includes Bobby Orr, Tom Bladon, and Doug Crossman.
“Undoubtedly, it’s a prestigious group,” Bouchard commented. “While it’s personally rewarding to be included, securing the victory on such a significant evening was paramount.”
The 26-year-old defensive player experienced a memorable night, now boasting 14 goals and 41 assists for the current season.
“It was one of the finest performances I’ve witnessed from a defenseman. Exceptional,” remarked Oilers captain Connor McDavid. “This illustrates his caliber. When he’s at his peak, he stands among the global elite, not merely among defensemen, but all players.”
Bouchard opened his scoring for the evening at 19:12 of the first period, unleashing a powerful shot from just within the blue line that pierced through the crowd and found its way beyond Capitals netminder Charlie Lindgren.
He subsequently put Edmonton ahead 2-1 less than five minutes into the second frame with a powerful shot that struck Lindgren’s glove. The goaltender attempted to bat the puck away, inadvertently knocking his glove into the goal following the puck.
Headwear descended onto the playing surface at the 4:30 mark of the third period as Bouchard received a pass from McDavid, maneuvered into the high slot, and unleashed a shot to complete his three-goal performance.
His sole gesture of triumph was lifting his stick skyward as his fellow players converged to congratulate him.
Selected tenth overall by Edmonton in 2018, Bouchard has earned a reputation for maintaining his composure regardless of the circumstances.
“I suppose that’s consistently been my nature. I strive to remain balanced,” he stated. “The fluctuations of a game are certainly present, but generally, if you can maintain a steady mindset, outcomes tend to be more favorable.”
Bouchard’s standout career game on Saturday will serve as an instructional example for developing defensemen, according to his defensive partner Mattias Ekholm.
“I’ll ensure my children view that tomorrow morning,” he remarked. “Seriously, who else in the league, or even throughout history, can achieve such a feat? He genuinely won that game for us.”
Even without possession of the puck, Bouchard’s play was solid, observed Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch.
“I’m unsure where to begin. He delivered a significant check in the corner [against Alex Ovechkin]. Naturally, the three goals were impressive, and he executed several defensive maneuvers. The catalog of his positive contributions is quite extensive,” he commented.
“It’s evident he ranks among the league’s top defensemen. He was certainly performing at his peak this evening, and perhaps his 400th game held particular significance.”
McDavid magic
Bouchard’s remarkable evening somewhat eclipsed another commanding performance from McDavid.
The prominent center tallied two goals — with the decisive goal coming 46 seconds into overtime — and provided three helpers, enabling him to reclaim the top spot in the NHL’s scoring competition. He currently holds 32 goals and 90 points for the season, positioning him three points ahead of Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon.
