The potential switch of Amadou Onana to Manchester United did not transpire in the year 2024.
The Belgian midfielder, who instead favored a move to Aston Villa over joining the Red Devils, has since established himself at Villa Park, recently celebrating a goal in his team’s dominant 4-0 Premier League victory against Bournemouth over the past weekend.
The Story Behind Amadou Onana’s Incomplete Transfer to Manchester United in 2024
While the majority of players would be thrilled by interest from Manchester United, Onana was not particularly drawn to the prospect of representing what is widely regarded as one of England’s most prominent clubs.
Instead, the plan articulated by the representatives from the West Midlands convinced him to commit to the Villans, as explained by his agent, who is also his sister, Melissa.
“The strategic plan presented by Aston Villa was exceptionally straightforward. It outlined a pathway for Amadou’s continued improvement,” she mentioned, as reported by Walfoot. “We engaged in discussions with the sporting director, and the financial compensation was also quite appealing, let’s be honest,” she added.
“With the European Championship approaching and Amadou demonstrating strong performances, we finalized the agreement. Subsequently, Manchester United expressed their interest. However, I had already committed to Aston Villa.”
“We were fully aware that Manchester United could potentially offer more favorable financial terms, but we had already pledged our commitment to Aston Villa, and the overall scheme was a suitable match. The style of play, the ambitions of the club – Amadou felt a sense of belonging there.”
Since then, Onana has played a role in helping Emery’s team secure a spot in the UEFA Champions League and appears to be forging a formidable partnership alongside John McGinn.
Still only 24 years old, he has much more to contribute, and the former player from Lille believes that working with Emery is supporting his efforts to achieve his goals.
“The manager pays meticulous attention to the finer points – it’s this characteristic that sets him apart and makes him so effective,” commented the Villa player in May. “In my opinion, he’s one of the finest in the sport, and he has personally elevated my game to a new level.
“There is a significant amount of effort involved, and he has brought to my attention elements of my play that I was previously unaware of.
“He is instrumental in my development both as an individual and as a player – I am thankful for the opportunity each day.”
