Discussions are underway for Orlando City SC to acquire Antoine Griezmann, the forward from Atlético Madrid, according to information received by ESPN from an insider.
Even though Griezmann’s current agreement with Atlético extends through 2027, representatives for the player have continued engaging in conversations with the Major League Soccer team regarding a possible move. However, no definitive terms have been finalized between Griezmann and Orlando City as of yet.
Griezmann has consistently indicated his desire to play in the North American professional league, designating MLS as a long-term goal during an interview with ESPN. Previous reports in March had connected him to a transfer to LAFC prior to him finalizing a new deal with Atlético.
“I have consistently stated that my aspiration is to conclude my career [in MLS],” Griezmann remarked to ESPN in 2023. “That is my aim, to be present there and conclude my playing days, enabling me to savor the sporting environment. I am a significant admirer of the league.”
The precise timeframe for this transfer remains uncertain, especially as Griezmann is anticipated to feature for the French national team in the upcoming World Cup in North America this summer. Nevertheless, an ESPN informant indicated that the decision rests with the player concerning whether he makes the move immediately or during the summer transfer period.
Currently, the attacking midfielder is serving his second tenure with Atlético Madrid, having scored 69 goals over 187 matches in various competitions since his arrival in 2021. Griezmann commenced his professional journey in Spain with Real Sociedad in 2009, subsequently moving to Atlético for his initial period, and later to Barcelona.
Following his three years playing for Barcelona, Griezmann made his way back to Atleti in 2021 initially as a loan player, before his transfer to the squad was made permanent.
At the club level, Griezmann has contributed to multiple successful campaigns that resulted in silverware for both Atlético Madrid and Barcelona. With Atlético, he secured the 2014 Supercopa de España, the 2017-18 Europa League championship, and the 2018 Super Cup, in addition to claiming the 2021 Copa del Rey with Barcelona.
On the international stage, Griezmann was a key member of the French national team that triumphed in the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the 2020-21 Nations League. His performances led to him being ranked third in the Ballon d’Or standings during both 2016 and 2018.
