Packers claim former Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs off waivers

The rapid pace of events in the NFL is a recurring theme.

Merely one day after his unceremonious departure concluded his often-lauded, yet consistently tumultuous, six-year stint with the Cowboys, defensive back Trevon Diggs has secured a spot with a playoff-contending squad right before the postseason commences, and has also been reunited with his closest companion.

Diggs was acquired via waivers by the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday afternoon, less than a full day after his unexpected and abrupt release from Dallas.

The initial report came from NFL insider Adam Schefter, who cited an undisclosed source in a post on the platform X.

According to Field Yates of ESPN, the Packers will cover Diggs’ $472,000 base salary for Week 18, along with an additional $58,823 if he participates in Sunday’s matchup.

Green Bay approaches the season’s final weekend with a 9-6-1 standing, positioning them as the seventh seed in the NFC playoffs. Although their defensive backfield surrenders 192.1 passing yards per contest—a figure surpassed by only six other teams across the league—the unit has amassed merely seven interceptions throughout the current season.

The existing cornerbacks for the Packers, specifically Keisean Nixon, Nate Hobbs, and Carrington Valentine, have faced difficulties, yet the extent of Diggs’ potential contribution remains uncertain. He hasn’t secured an interception since Week 10 of the previous season and has visibly underperformed since recovering from his 2023 ACL tear.

Less than three weeks ago, coaching staff for the Cowboys kept Diggs sidelined from games—notwithstanding his assertions of fitness—due to concerns he wasn’t completely prepared for competitive play following his recent knee issue and a concussion sustained in what he termed an incident at home.

Nevertheless, Micah Parsons, the erstwhile Dallas edge rusher concluding his inaugural year in Green Bay on the injured reserve list, expressed evident satisfaction with the acquisition, as conveyed in a New Year’s Eve message posted on X.

Green Bay is scheduled to play in Minnesota on Sunday, marking the conclusion of their regular season. Subsequently, they will travel for the wild-card phase of the playoffs, where they will compete against either Philadelphia or Chicago.
