Three days have passed in the season’s second major golf championship, and the competition remains intensely undecided.
Alex Smalley established a two-stroke advantage over his rivals late Saturday, positioning himself as the leader going into the PGA Championship’s concluding day. His score of six-under par for the week marks the lowest achieved by any participant at Aronimink thus far.
However, a substantial contingent of players trails closely. Five competitors are currently at four-under par, featuring prominent names like Jon Rahm and Aaron “Two Gloves” Rai. Rory McIlroy also mounted a significant challenge earlier on Saturday. Having begun the day one-over par, he delivered a round of 66, four-under, in the third round, narrowing the gap to one stroke behind the then-leaders. He now heads a cluster of players at three-under, alongside Patrick Reed, Xander Schauffele, and Maverick McNealy.
Despite Smalley’s current first place, the championship trophy remains attainable for any contender as Sunday afternoon approaches.
The final day will reveal which individual prevails and successfully vies for the prestigious Wanamaker Trophy.
