Phillies’ Turner, Bohm Injured; IL Stints Threaten No. 2 Seed.

The Philadelphia Phillies announced Monday that two infield players, shortstop Trea Turner and third baseman Alec Bohm, were being placed on the 10-day injured list.

The most impactful absence is that of Turner, who exited Sunday’s contest in Miami because of a right hamstring issue. Phillies head coach Rob Thomson shared Monday that it was classified as a Grade 1 strain but the organization anticipates his “return around the time of the playoffs.”

“The diagnosis was more encouraging than initially feared,” Thomson commented.

Turner, who hit a home run on Sunday before his departure, currently holds a batting line of .305/.356/.458, accumulating 31 doubles, seven triples, 15 home runs, 69 RBIs, 94 runs scored, and 36 stolen bases. Serving as the Phillies’ initial batter in the lineup, he heavily utilizes his speed as both a significant threat on stolen base attempts and a capable defensive shortstop. This underscores the potential gravity of the hamstring concern.

Turner previously experienced a period of absence last year, spanning from May 4 to June 17, due to an injury involving his left hamstring.

It is expected that Edmundo Sosa will assume the role of everyday shortstop while Turner is unavailable.

Regarding Bohm, he is being placed on the IL due to inflammation in his left shoulder. Throughout the current season, he has achieved a slash line of .272/.319/.384, complemented by nine home runs across 111 games played. Baseball Reference attributes a WAR of 0.4 to Bohm, who is 29 years old, for the current season. Typically, Sosa would step in for Bohm, but with Turner sidelined, Weston Wilson emerges as a potential candidate, given his limited exposure at third base within the minor leagues. Thomson mentioned on Monday that they anticipate Bohm’s return following the standard 10-day period.

Utility player Otto Kemp and infielder Donovan Walton have been incorporated into the roster to fill the vacancies.

The injuries affecting Turner and Bohm follow closely on the heels of Phillies’ star pitcher Zack Wheeler being ruled out for the remainder of the season after undergoing a surgical procedure to address a blood clot in his shoulder.

Entering Monday’s series opener against the Mets, the Phillies maintain a seven-game advantage in the NL East standings, making it improbable that the injuries to Turner and Bohm will significantly impact their pursuit of the division title. They currently possess the No. 2 seed and a bye, bypassing the Wild Card Series, although they are 5 ½ games behind the Brewers in the National League standings. The Phillies harbor ambitions of securing a World Series title, and any compromise to their lineup during the playoffs would present a substantial setback to their aspirations of claiming the championship.
