Oscar Piastri expressed feeling “at ease” advocating for his own interests within McLaren, addressing Jos Verstappen’s remarks conveyed to Dutch press, hinting that the Australian ought to be more assertive in his quest for an initial Formula 1 championship.
Verstappen, a former F1 competitor, mentioned to De Telegraaf that Piastri, or his manager Mark Webber, should vocally express discontent, implying McLaren had seemingly directed greater backing towards Lando Norris’s championship aspirations recently.
Piastri countered the notion that McLaren was prioritizing Norris, affirming that it was “not accurate” that McLaren had started leaning towards a specific driver. While acknowledging his astonishment at the emergence of several recent challenges, he specified that “everything is understandable”.
Following assessments of his recent difficulties involving himself and McLaren, Piastri presently perceives himself as significantly more equipped for comparable circumstances should they transpire across the remaining four events of the season.
“I believe, personally, we maintain openness amongst ourselves regarding our viewpoints, be it perspectives on equitable treatment or judgments on appropriate resolutions,” Piastri articulated.
“And stemming from that perspective, we possess the capacity to champion ourselves, and I am notably comfortable in undertaking such action. The team decidedly encourages us to voice our individual perspectives in a self-reliant manner.”

“However, I recognize the inherent complexity in navigating circumstances where two vehicles from the same team vie for a championship ultimately obtainable by only one.
“There will naturally exist challenges in that regard. I appreciate that the team sanctions us to pursue the drivers’ championship individually. Personally, I aspire to compete and attain the championship recognizing that my accomplishment stems from my capabilities and the efforts within my purview.
“It’s evident that opting for one driver carries a 50% likelihood of not favoring the other. Thus, I believe we receive ample encouragement and welcome to assert ourselves already, negating any perceived necessity for alteration.”
Team Principal Andrea Stella proposed post-Mexico that Piastri’s immediate performance had endured from minimal grip environments.
Piastri incorporated that his recent adversities during the United States and Mexico City Grands Prix predominantly correlated to circuit attributes and their subsequent influence on the McLaren package. While not expounding into excessive specifics, he suggested that a detachment existed linking his driving technique, the gentler array of tires, and how the vehicle leverages the tire.
He clarified that, through amendments to his driving approach, he was competent in partially resolving that detachment.
“I perceive Austin and Mexico as distinct relative to numerous circuits we’ve encountered,” he elucidated.

“Even scrutinizing the tire utilization across those weekends, possessing two instances where the soft tire in Mexico constituted a C5 – excluding the C6, which stands somewhat distinct – for the gentlest tires to feature in qualifying and the race embodies atypical circumstances and marks a considerable divergence from occurrences earlier within the season.
“Thus, I infer the presence of a slightly altered dynamic. The precise mechanism remains elusive, but I speculate that specific circuits necessitate adapting to elements, like corners, and modifying one’s driving approach.
“However, across recent weekends, consistent modification of the driving style has proven necessary, diverging from my experiences throughout the year.
“The process of comprehending the required adjustments and internalizing their nuances represents the steepest segment of the learning curve.
“Nevertheless, considering the observed tire utilization, conditions have exhibited modest alterations. I don’t presuppose any inevitable modifications; yet, the last couple of weekends seem somewhat distinct contrasted against the majority of races.”
