Poirier’s Potential Retirement at UFC 318 Sparks MMA Tributes

While the final outcome wasn’t a victory, Dustin Poirier’s retirement marks the end of an era for a true icon. The former interim UFC lightweight titleholder – a celebrated action fighter of our time – announced his career’s conclusion Saturday night, following his defeat against Max Holloway at UFC 318 in Louisiana.

Although Poirier entered the fight with a 2-0 lead over Holloway, his UFC journey concluded with a unanimous decision loss (48-47, 49-46, 49-46). The fight was another intense battle, providing a poignant and respectful farewell to the beloved athlete.

Poirier, at 36, retires as a highly regarded fighter of his generation. Despite not securing an undisputed UFC title, “The Diamond” created an impressive legacy over his 14-year presence in the Octagon. He triumphed over several elite fighters across multiple weight categories, including notable victories against Conor McGregor (twice), Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje, Anthony Pettis, and Dan Hooker.

He also leaves the sport holding the fourth-highest number of post-fight bonuses in UFC history (15), tied for the fifth-highest number of finishes in UFC history (15), tied for most finishes against current, former, or future UFC champions (6), and tied for the sixth-highest number of wins in UFC history (22). These statistics highlight his prolonged success in the sport’s most competitive weight classes.

Following his heartfelt farewell, many fellow fighters honored Poirier and his significant contributions to the sport.
