Predators’ Season Turnaround: Can They Do It?

BARRY TROTZ PERCEIVES the pressure intensifying. The anxiety manifests as persistent inquiries, as rival NHL executives contact him about acquiring established players amidst another frustrating period for the Nashville Predators.

“Multiple teams have expressed interest in acquiring offensive talent. Several individuals on our roster can fill that role effectively” Trotz shared with ESPN on the aforementioned Monday. “I’ve connected with their representatives to gauge their perspectives. If our performance rebounds, the situation resolves itself. Conversely, if challenges persist, some players might seek opportunities elsewhere, especially considering their experience and desire to compete for championships.”

Nashville currently occupies the bottom rung in the NHL standings, holding the 32nd spot based on points percentage (.364). Their defensive statistics place them at 30th, with an average of 3.68 goals conceded per contest. Additionally, they currently hold the least productive offense in the league, netting a mere 2.32 goals per game. In the most recent matchup against the Florida Panthers, the team suffered a resounding 8-3 defeat. This occurred in a stretch where they have struggled, lacking victories in eight of the past nine games.

Coach Andrew Brunette characterized the game’s turning point as occurring within “11 seconds”, which is when Florida capitalized and seized the advantage. “Accountability falls on each of us. We generally depend on establishing positive momentum early on. We’re struggling with initiating and maintaining that advantage,” he commented.

Nashville has unfortunately grown accustomed to unfavorable starts. This marks the second consecutive season where the team encountered a significant deceleration in the early portion, led by Brunette. During the previous season, Nashville’s record stood at 7-11-3 following 21 contests. This year, they have recorded a 6-11-4 standing after the identical number of games.

The Predators aren’t publicly advertising roster availability presently. The discussions Trotz engages in are primarily investigative, focusing on prominent potential acquisitions similar to forwards Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault, who possess unrestricted veto powers over any transfers. He described the calls as indicating continued interest should circumstances alter.

Speaking to ESPN before the Florida game, Trotz indicated the approaching “seven or eight games will act as a crucial measure” in establishing the appropriate occasion for initiating complex discussions with veteran team members, potentially signaling a change in direction, or determining if the Predators still harbor hope for their present season.

The Predators themselves are intentionally ignoring anxieties concerning their current squad’s long-term outlook.

“I am actively avoiding speculation concerning future scenarios. Absent insight into organizational decisions, investing energy in contemplation proves futile. You must prioritize current performance and aim to revive momentum” clarified center Ryan O’Reilly, a player often speculated to be of interest to opposing teams. “Direct your attention toward attaining immediate success and reestablishing confidence.”

How might the Predators regain this necessary momentum?

As per Trotz, the recuperation strategy will not depend upon an instantaneous alteration in coaching, irrespective of the team’s present course.

“I have confidence in Bruno’s talents. That belief explains my steadfast resolve. Public opinions carry reduced weight. Opting to dismiss a coach is sometimes viewed as a simple choice.” Trotz stated.

TROTZ SELECTED BRUNETTE as head coach in 2023. Brunette’s prior experience includes coaching the Panthers across 75 games during the 2021-22 season, following Joel Quenneville’s departure. In that season, Brunette earned a nomination for the Jack Adams Award, recognizing his leadership in achieving the NHL’s most dominant record. Following a second-round sweep by the Tampa Bay Lightning, Brunette was superseded by Paul Maurice. Maurice subsequently led the Panthers in achieving a sequence of three consecutive Stanley Cup Finals, triumphing in the latter two seasons (2024-25).

Brunette spent the 2022-23 season serving as the associate coach for New Jersey, widely recognized for his contributions in elevating the Devils to the NHL’s fourth-highest-scoring unit. When Trotz recruited Brunette back in May of 2023, it was perceived as an innovative decision made by the newly appointed general manager. Trotz, acknowledged for prioritizing defensive aspects demonstrated throughout his extensive tenure spanning 1,812 games at the helm of an NHL team, selected an individual celebrated for his expertise in high-velocity offensive strategies.

However, following Nashville’s achievement of ranking 10th overall in scoring stats under Brunette’s direction during the initial season, attaining 3.24 goals per contest, the Predators subsequently fell to last overall across the subsequent two seasons when consolidating offense.

Trotz has remained a vocal advocate for Brunette for the last two years. During a recent interaction with the publication The Tennessean, Trotz vocally emphasized during the dialog his need for more outputs from the highest-regarded players on the team.

“I maintain a clear understanding regarding where mistakes arise. Failures originating from puck carriers who misplace passes, directing them straight to the opposition, should not be placed as fault of the coach’s responsibility,” he conveyed to the paper’s team.

When ESPN questioned whether he intended to secure Brunette’s role for the totality of the 2025-26 campaign, Trotz abstained from making firm commitments. However, the Nashville GM noted absence of compelling factors inciting contemplations concerning coaching adjustments.

“The scope of my responsibilities relies on a diverse collection of considerations. Influences might stem from proprietors or otherwise, but to date, none have. As a result, I stand beside and endorse the coach that I believe in,” he added.

Unlike other NHL GMs, Trotz’s experience on the coaching side provides a viewpoint for the direction of the team and the leadership provided by Brunette, as well as the latitude extended to Trotz by David Poile, Predators’ original general manager. Poile provided extensive time for Trotz to establish himself as a leading head coach during the team’s early phases during the expansion.

However, Trotz primarily believes that the Predators have displayed an adequate degree of commitment, perhaps short of the desired accomplishments. This persistence should not, in his mind, have consequences for Brunette’s career.

“If you actually view our gameplay patterns, athletes have displayed unyielding determination. Athletes display tenacity and dedication throughout practice routines.” he noted. “Diminished athlete support directed toward coaching frequently materializes through reduced practice commitment. A lack of energy becomes pervasive. I can confidently confirm the absence of such phenomena.”

In contrast, he believes the players are invested in securing achievements for Brunette.

“I believe he’s produced significant relationships with the team. I believe these players regard Bruno as someone who’s on their corner. He’s encouraging them to enhance their abilities.” Trotz shared. “They are exerting maximum effort, being creative, engaging in every facet of execution. However, tangible gains have been deficient.”

Should Brunette encounter potential negative effects linked to the Predators’ continued failure from fulfilling their goals, his general manager has made a decision to pass on a potential head coaching candidate:

Coach Barry Trotz.

Speculation originating from external sources suggests that Trotz could return to the coaching role if Brunette is relieved of his duties. The speculation also mentions this decision is not exclusive to salvaging the current campaign, but also allowing Trotz the chance to show the capabilities of the team roster he built.

Regardless, Trotz has been outspoken concerning this potential opportunity and decision.

“Upon initially taking on this particular role, it signified intentionally turning toward management as opposed to active team instruction. Specific elements relating to team instruction attract me. For example, I value the intensity present during match days and the camaraderie within locker rooms. Upon accepting this role, it demands complete commitment.” he stated. “Given commencement of assigned duties, it becomes essential to observe and complete these processes.”

Rather than focusing on the coaching leadership, Trotz has openly placed the responsibility to salvage the season upon the individual players. The athletes are starting to become more vocal related to team struggles after two periods of disappointment to start the campaign.

FOLLOWING A DEFEAT against the Philadelphia Flyers early this month, Ryan O’Reilly’s frustration overwhelmed his emotions.

“I should have remained silent” he noted. “My statements sounded almost like an act of self-pity.”

O’Reilly mentioned a condition where Nashville could never realize success “if I’m contributing as pathetically as I am” functioning as the team’s central forward. “Unnecessary turnovers became too common of an occurrence. I could not manage a simple 6-foot pass to even attempt to maintain possession,” O’Reilly shared during a video segment that has since circulated widely. “It comes across as irresponsible. Excluding a limited timeframe, my career has been full of disappointment. An effective resolution has not come to mind, unfortunately.”

Days afterward, O’Reilly wished he had suppressed his emotions.

“Manifesting the public display causes adverse consequences, reflected poorly across the team environment. Portrayal of myself seemed self-centered. Remaining silent while focusing on positive change is the best resolution.” mentioned O’Reilly, who has secured 13 points within 21 appearances.

Greg Wyshynski: Ryan O’Reilly not focused on trade rumors

Greg Wyshynski discusses Ryan O’Reilly’s postgame rant last week as well as the trade rumors about the Predators center.

Captain Roman Josi mentioned that O’Reilly recorded an exceptional season during 2018-19. He earned the Conn Smythe during St. Louis Blues’ impressive Stanley Cup competition. This coincided with obtaining his only Selke Trophy awarded to the most accomplished defensive-minded forward throughout the collective group of teams.

“I indicated the morning subsequent, ‘Upon viewing your history across the NHL, your accomplished seasons extend significantly beyond only one. “That demonstrates Factor’s demeanor.” Josi emphasized referring O’Reilly’s well-known nickname. “His prioritization toward team objectives shines through. Every day I witness his individual preparation. He steps onto the ice earlier and keeps practicing later in comparison to his fellow teammates. Criticism leveled at himself seemed too harsh and unwarranted.”

Brady Skjei, team defenseman, also spoke to O’Reilly’s character on and off the playing field.

“All our team members agree regarding his elite caliber and sustained level of superior performance.” Skjei stated. “He demands constant excellence and high performance to ensure team results. From my vantage, he contributes positively to every game. He consistently prevails during puck competitions while performing various overlooked crucial maneuvers. As a result, his role significantly boosts both on-ice play along with locker room moral.”

O’Reilly, 34 years of age, was signed with a four-year agreement valued at $18M, negotiated by Trotz during the summer 2023. Nashville required an elite performer at the center position. Trotz was impressed with O’Reilly’s demonstrated leadership abilities which allowed mentoring of younger team players.

Skjei, Marchessault and Stamkos all followed in the next year, after Nashville secured a postseason position, recording a 16-2-0 stretch during the second half, before unfortunately being ousted by Vancouver 4-2 in the opening round.

Skjei filled the role that was vacated by Ryan McDonagh, an experienced defenseman who made the decision to request a trade back to Tampa Bay which was subsequently approved. Marchessault, who had previously received recognition for his play in Vegas, along with Stamkos, who secured 555 total goals throughout 16 seasons with the Lightning, combined to improve offensive production for the roster which was lacking emerging talent within the team’s offensive-minded players.

“We targeted purchasing sufficient opportunities to obtain similarities between Washington’s roster and their success last season,” Trotz described. Washington famously completed a Stanley Cup series run during 2018. “During last year, the expectations were exceeded which caused frustrations for our team members. During that initial period, we failed to operate as a unified team, resulting in too many losses. During most competitions, a lack of viable path to achieve success was apparent for a large part of our games.”

For the current year, Trotz is positive with both the commitment and execution. “An experienced team coach may determine periods of impressive or sub-par play. Previously, sub-par performance plagued the team. Currently, play seems consistent and effective, though the statistical outcomes haven’t followed suit.”

What’s been consistent during the last two seasons? The Predators have struggled to obtain a top performance on the offensive side of the puck. This stems from a variety of players, with the most important being the athletes brought in with the intention of providing offense. The main factor remains Stamkos. Stamkos, 35, only achieved one goal in the first 14 competitions. Through 21 games he secured four goals in addition to one assist.

“Thoughts often fluctuate rapidly between positive and negative thoughts. Personal experiences and maturation teaches the counterproductivity of negative focus,” Stamkos noted. “That negativity only worsens the performance. Thoughts surrounding personal and team achievement must center on the next competition. If scoring performance lags for the team, or if I continue struggling, the next game may provide a catalyst for positive momentum.”

Despite holding official no-movement clauses, Stamkos and Marchessault have appeared on the list of potential team transfers. The same applies to O’Reilly, but lacks direct protection and will be informed and involved during decisions relating to an eventual destination from any potential transfer from the Nashville squad.

Stamkos believes the media reports surrounding potential trades are “hearsay” at this stage of the season.

“Decisions may or may not occur at some stage. Focusing on rumors provides minimal value. My responsibilities depend on achieving on-ice progress which may help boost the performance for the team. The early part of this season has proven difficult to secure consistent results.” he stated.

Stamkos views any rumors connected to team transfers stemming from larger indicators connected to the Predators’ period of competitive play.

“If success falls out of reach, media outlets likely discuss possible team movements. Multiple reports surfaced last season. Continued discussion relating to potential restructuring brings more negativity, as our current ranking fails to meet internal ambitions. The overall outlook should improve during the remainder of the schedule,” he concludes.

Steven Stamkos wins it for Predators in OT

Steven Stamkos rips one in as the Predators take down the Penguins in overtime.

Optimism can still be justified given recent events for the Nashville group. Josi appeared during only nine competitions as a result of suffering an upper body injury. He made a return on the weekend versus the Colorado Avalanche. That competition saw the Predators compete evenly with the NHL’s most elite team. Two empty-net opportunities resulted in an eventual loss of 3-0. Nashville went 3-7-2, absent from Josi’s consistent level of performance within the overall team line-up.

“Complications came into play. Team ambitions were not achieved. Losing has a direct impact to overall moral. During the prior season, that frustration became quite familiar. The roster definitely requires several victories,” according to Josi.

Like all teammates on the Predators, the team captain hopes to eliminate trade discussions from within the team setting.

“Speculation consistently arises when performances decline. Previously, similar issues existed. As of now, the schedule leaves plenty of room for improvement. Overall faith across the team seems extremely strong. The organization may correct this slide and, by the transfer deadlines, achieve a ranking where talent acquisition, instead of team liquidation, becomes the primary goal,” Josi concluded.
