Jiri Prochazka is preparing to clash with Khalil Rountree Jr. at UFC 320, but he will also be available that week should his services be required elsewhere.
The former light heavyweight titleholder is slated to act as the designated alternate for the championship contest occurring that same evening, where Magomed Ankalaev will defend his title in a rematch against Alex Pereira. Prochazka’s representatives confirmed this information to MMA Fighting on Monday, after he initially alluded to his secondary assignment during a conversation with Yahoo! Sports.
The UFC frequently utilizes alternate fighters as a precautionary measure in case of unforeseen circumstances affecting the main event, and this arrangement is made simpler due to Prochazka’s pre-existing commitment to the same event.
For Prochazka, the key adjustment involves adhering to the 205-pound weight restriction for a possible title opportunity if called upon. His current bout is a non-title affair, typically allowing for a one-pound weight allowance.
Evidently, Prochazka shares a history with Pereira, having lost to the Brazilian on two prior occasions, but a trilogy fight remains a distinct possibility. Conversely, Prochazka has yet to encounter Ankalaev, representing a completely new challenge for both competitors.
Serving as the backup fighter does not guarantee future opportunities, but Prochazka’s selection could position him for a potential title bid if he overcomes Rountree in October.
Prochazka recently defeated another former champion in Jamahal Hill with his latest victory, and a win against Rountree could establish him as a contender to face the victor of the Ankalaev-Pereira matchup.
UFC 320 will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Oct. 4, featuring Ankalaev vs. Pereira 2 as the headline event, with bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili defending his title against Cory Sandhagen in the co-main event. Prochazka’s match against Rountree will be part of the main card on pay-per-view.
