The Dragons of Wrexham will participate in their initial contest in the second-highest league of English football in over four decades this Saturday, as they travel to face Southampton, a team that was recently demoted from the Premier League, in a Championship match scheduled for the early afternoon.
The Red Dragons, supported by Hollywood figures, were demoted from the former Division Two back in 1982. Subsequently, they spent a total of 15 seasons outside the professional leagues before the arrival of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. These individuals acquired the club in 2020 and, with the support of a Disney+ film crew, orchestrated an extraordinary transformation, both in terms of the team’s performance and its overall organization.
The team’s achievement of securing three successive promotions to reach the Championship is unprecedented. A significant amount of the anticipation during this pre-season has revolved around assessing their potential to continue their ascent and gain promotion to the Premier League.
David Prutton on Wrexham’s rise

David Prutton, a former midfielder for Southampton and Leeds United who currently presents Sky Sports’ coverage of the English Football League, believes that the Welsh team will face a completely different set of challenges in the upcoming season.
“The level of ambition shown by Wrexham is certainly noteworthy. Their achievements have been truly inspiring, and their belief in what they can still achieve is quite remarkable,” he stated in an interview with FourFourTwo.

“Now, they will be competing against teams that have ambitions of reaching the Premier League. Phil Parkinson is well-versed in the Championship, and he will implement a pragmatic approach to make the team defensively strong.
“The decisions made by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, along with CEO Shaun Harvey, have been incredibly astute. However, with all due respect, I would consider it overly optimistic to anticipate another promotion this season.
“Nevertheless, they will undoubtedly be a fantastic addition to the Championship.”
Following their opening match of the weekend against Southampton, Wrexham will play host to West Brom, followed by Sheffield Wednesday, a team currently facing difficulties. The month of August will conclude with an away game against Millwall.

During the summer transfer window, Parkinson’s team has made several notable acquisitions, including securing the services of Kieffer Moore, a proven goal scorer in the Championship, who reportedly joined from Sheffield United for £2 million.
Lewis O’Brien, a midfielder, has been acquired from Nottingham Forest. In addition, the team has brought in Conor Coady, an experienced defender from Leicester City, the winners of the 2023/24 Championship, and Josh Windass, an attacking midfielder from Sheffield Wednesday.
