PSG land Barcelona starlet Dro Fernández

Paris Saint-Germain has finalized the acquisition of Barcelona’s highly skilled young player, Dro Fernández. The French club reached a deal with the LaLiga team, paying a sum marginally exceeding his €6 million ($7 million) contract buyout.

The 18-year-old Fernández surprised Barcelona earlier this month by announcing his desire to leave in January, seeking more consistent playing time.

During his introductory event with PSG, Dro conveyed his profound happiness and honor at becoming a part of Paris Saint-Germain, describing it as a significantly proud occasion for himself and his relatives. He also expressed strong enthusiasm and eagerness to perform and dedicate himself entirely to the club.

Numerous elite European teams pursued the young talent, yet PSG secured his commitment. The French side’s manager, Luis Enrique, was instrumental in finalizing the transfer.

According to reports received by ESPN, Luis Enrique—who shares Iván de la Peña as an agent with Fernández—reportedly engaged in a telephone conversation with the player, persuading him to transfer to the French outfit.

The choice made by Fernández has not been favorably received by Barcelona’s coach, Hansi Flick. Flick had demonstrated considerable faith in the offensive midfielder, whose style of play draws comparisons to Thiago Alcantara and Pedri.

Flick included Fernández, a player who entered Barcelona’s youth system at 14 in 2022, in last summer’s preseason trip to Asia, where he found the net in a victory against Daegu FC. This season, Flick also granted him his initial appearances in both LaLiga and the Champions League.

In comments made last weekend, following Fernández’s announcement of his departure, Flick stated his preference against retaining players lacking complete dedication. He also implied that “individuals close to” the player significantly contributed to swaying his decision.

Nonetheless, sources informed ESPN that Fernández perceives no definite route to consistent senior team play at Barcelona, particularly within Flick’s primary 4-2-3-1 tactical setup, which positions Frenkie de Jong and Pedri in the deep midfield roles.

Within Flick’s tactical framework, Fernández’s most suitable position would be as an attacking midfielder (the No. 10), where Fermín López, Dani Olmo, and Raphinha have largely occupied the playing time. Alternatively, he could play out wide, though his long-term preference is to operate as a central midfielder (the No. 8).

Even though he featured five times for the senior squad this season, his total playing time amounts to merely 148 minutes, with his most recent appearance being a substitute role against Atlético Madrid on December 2.

Similar to Flick, the club was reportedly taken aback by Fernández’s choice, as ESPN sources indicated an anticipation that he would ink a new contract, including a higher buyout clause, upon reaching his 18th birthday.

He marked his 18th birthday on January 12; during the return flight from the Spanish Supercopa final in Saudi Arabia, his teammate Raphinha presented him with a cake. However, this occasion will now represent his final moments visible in Barcelona’s team attire.
