Pujara Predicts India’s XI for 1st Test vs New Zealand

India is scheduled to compete against New Zealand across multiple formats, comprising five T20 matches, five ODIs, and a pair of Test matches. Although the limited-overs encounters offer team members a chance to solidify their roles within their teams, the Test fixtures carry immense significance for India regarding the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) standings.

Prior to the initial Test match, ex-Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara revealed his ideal starting lineup during a clip published by Cricinfo. His chosen side includes a veteran opening duo, an up-and-coming batsman for the third slot, a pair of wicketkeeper-batsmen, and a fast-bowling unit spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah.

Cheteshwar Pujara endorses KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal as openers

Based on the footage released by Cricinfo, Pujara has favored KL Rahul along with Yashasvi Jaiswal to kick off the batting for India during the series opener against New Zealand. This pairing brings together a mix of seasoned skill and aggressive strokeplay at the top. For the number three slot, Pujara opted for Devdutt Padikkal, placing Shubman Gill in the fourth spot. Padikkal earned his place following remarkable outings in Sri Lanka, where he compiled two hundred-run scores.

The southpaw offers a steadying presence in the middle overs while presenting another dimension against the Kiwi bowling setup. The former Indian international also slotted Rishabh Pant in at fifth position and Dhruv Jurel at sixth. Even so, Pant’s participation in the fixture hinges on receiving medical approval.

Featuring Jurel in tandem with Pant equips Pujara’s chosen team with two designated wicketkeeper-batsmen, enhancing the overall depth of the batting line-up. Ravindra Jadeja takes the seventh spot as the chief spin-bowling all-rounder, with Nitish Kumar Reddy named at eight. This structure enables India to maintain lower-order run-scoring capability while expanding their tactical bowling choices.

Jasprit Bumrah heads the pace department for India

In Pujara’s recommended line-up, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna form the trio of main fast bowlers. Bumrah’s knack for finding seam movement and taking crucial wickets renders him a vital asset, with Siraj and Krishna offering extra pace assistance. Jadeja stands as the sole dedicated spinner in Pujara’s lineup, though his two-way skill set grants the squad adaptability in both disciplines. Furthermore, Nitish contributes medium-pace overs in addition to his lower-order batting capabilities.

The broader Indian roster encompasses supplementary bowling choices, such as Akash Deep, Anshul Kamboj, Kuldeep Yadav, and Washington Sundar. Deep along with Kamboj have been recalled to the squad for the two-match Test encounter, supplying further fast-bowling depth. The initial Test match between India and New Zealand is set to start on November 19 at Wellington’s Basin Reserve, with the final Test slated for Christchurch starting November 27.

Cheteshwar Pujara’s suggested India XI: KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.
