Emma Raducanu commenced her Indian Wells tournament with a strong performance, securing a decisive win in straight sets against Russia’s Anastasia Zakharova.
The top-ranked British player, Raducanu, beamed and acknowledged the spectators following her 6-1, 6-3 triumph at the esteemed WTA 1,000 competition held in California.
The 23-year-old athlete, seeded 25th and granted a pass in the initial round, is set to meet world number six Amanda Anisimova in the third round, assuming the American defeats Russia’s Anna Blinkova.
“My performance felt truly strong,” Raducanu communicated to BBC Sport.
“For the past month, I hadn’t felt particularly well, so I’m extremely satisfied with the effort put in during the last week and how it translated onto the court today. This provides immense assurance that one is on the correct path.”

Subsequent to Raducanu’s elimination in the second round of the Australian Open in January, the 2021 US Open victor advanced to just the second final of her professional career in Cluj, yet subsequently did not secure a single victory in Doha or Dubai.
During an overpowering opening set against Zakharova, she secured 80% of points on her first serve and only yielded six points across her four service games.
The 24-year-old, 86th-ranked Zakharova, fended off a break point in the initial game of the second set; however, Raducanu then held her serve flawlessly before achieving the decisive break at the subsequent chance.
