Raducanu: No Longer Hiding After Stalker Ordeal

Raducanu achieved global recognition when she triumphed at the US Open back in 2021, at the age of just 18.

Previously, she experienced being the target of a stalker; another individual received a five-year restraining order in 2022 after walking 23 miles to reach her residence.

Following the troubling event in Dubai, the British athlete augmented her security presence at tournaments and expressed appreciation for the safeguarding measures implemented at events.

In June, Raducanu shared with BBC Sport that she had been feeling a heightened sense of safety at tournaments, while still maintaining a level of vigilance when going out.

This month, she is engaged in training with coach Francisco Roig in Barcelona but has dedicated a significant portion of the past few weeks to commuting by train from her parents’ home in Bromley to London.

Raducanu mentioned that she had contemplated taking a vacation after concluding her season prematurely due to sickness and a foot ailment, but she yearned for the comfort of her home environment.

“I’ve hardly been present in the UK this year as a result of extensive competition, but the opportunity to spend quality time with my parents has been exceptionally delightful,” she expressed.

“It evokes memories of my younger days – the same bedroom, everything remains the same.”

While navigating the hustle and bustle of rush hour travel is an experience in itself, Raducanu suggests that she is becoming more at ease with being recognised in public spaces.

“During rush hour, people are deeply engrossed in their own personal worlds. They aren’t particularly attentive and likely aren’t anticipating encountering me either,” she remarked.

“I usually have my hood up, or something similar, but they’re simply highly focused and preoccupied with their own affairs.”

“It’s all quite chaotic. It’s as if everyone is on a mission. You have to be assertive, just to make your way through.”

“If individuals recognise me, if they notice me, and they wish to approach me, then that’s wonderful, but I don’t necessarily feel as though I’m concealing myself from anything any longer.”
