Raducanu’s ‘Most Dispiriting’ Slam: What Went Wrong?

Last year, Raducanu demonstrated positive advancement, re-entering the global top 30 rankings and competing in a greater number of matches than in any prior season of her professional life.

Nevertheless, the technical training she had intended to undergo during the off-season with her coach, Francisco Roig – renowned for assisting Rafael Nadal in securing 16 of his 22 Grand Slam victories – suffered setbacks due to a foot ailment.

Upon Raducanu’s comeback in 2026, a modification to her forehand technique – specifically, an elevated and extended backswing intended to generate increased spin – became evident.

Despite this, she appeared to exhibit a lack of confidence in that particular stroke during her match against Potapova, successfully landing only 70% of her forehand returns, a stark contrast to her opponent’s 96%, and committing 19 unforced errors with that side of her game.

“My aspiration is to perform with an altered approach. The discrepancy between my current style of play and my desired style is an area I intend to focus on,” Raducanu stated.

“Certainly, there are moments where I execute the game exactly as I envision, and these manifest in brief bursts, which is encouraging. However, this isn’t the level of consistency I aim for.

“Immediate perfection isn’t expected, but as I dedicate more effort to cultivating my preferred playing style, it will increasingly define my presence whenever I compete.”
