Raiders Release Christian Wilkins, Citing Foot Rehab Issues, Voiding $35.2M Guarantee.

The Silver and Black franchise inked defensive lineman Christian Wilkins to a four-year, $110 million agreement back in March of 2024. They terminated his contract this Thursday, asserting they aren’t obligated to compensate him due to his rehabilitation efforts regarding a foot ailment, according to reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Sources indicate Wilkins has formally lodged a complaint with the NFLPA as a direct response.

The termination follows reports that the Raiders had nullified the $35.2 million in guaranteed funds remaining on his contract the previous month.

The Raiders publicly acknowledged the decision with an official statement, citing the absence of “a definitive timeline or strategy for his eventual return to gameplay” concerning Wilkins.

The predicament initiated when Wilkins suffered a Jones fracture in his left foot during Week 5 of the preceding season. This ailment necessitated surgical intervention, sidelining the 29-year-old for the remainder of the season. The issue persisted as training camp commenced, prompting the Raiders to place him on the physically unable to perform list just last week.

Subsequent ESPN reports suggested that the Raiders believed Wilkins required additional surgery on his foot, which he reportedly declined, leading them to nullify his financial guarantees due to an alleged “failure to uphold his physical readiness for competitive play.”

Wilkins’ anticipated return date remained ambiguous until Thursday. However, Raiders’ head coach Pete Carroll had previously lauded his dedication back in May:

“It’s been a trying recovery process, and he’s committed fully to what’s required,” Carroll stated. “He’s been a consistent presence here, arriving early and dedicating himself to the work. He’s not quite ready for a full return. We’re navigating a lengthy, demanding phase. Thankfully, we have ample time, and we intend to utilize every moment to meticulously manage his recovery.”

Wilkins was considered a significant acquisition for the Raiders during the prior offseason, joining the squad following an exceptional fifth season with the Miami Dolphins, where he achieved a career-best of nine sacks. His $110 million agreement stood as the second-largest among defensive tackles in NFL history regarding total value, guaranteed compensation, and average annual earnings, second only to Chris Jones’ monumental deal with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Wilkins was envisioned to create a formidable pass-rushing threat in tandem with Maxx Crosby, but the Raiders ultimately finished ranked only 21st in the NFL in quarterback sacks, highlighting one of their numerous struggles throughout a 4-13 season.

It’s important to acknowledge that the Raiders have undergone changes in their leadership structure since signing Wilkins, transitioning from head coach Antonio Pierce and general manager Tom Telesco to Carroll and GM John Spytek. It wouldn’t be surprising if their level of enthusiasm for retaining Wilkins for the long haul differed from that of their predecessors.

Here’s insight into the salary cap implications for the Raiders, as outlined by Pro Football Talk:

The decision will result in a cap charge of $17.925 million for the year 2025, with an additional $55.025 million impacting the cap in 2026.

Nevertheless, there are already discussions indicating the team’s belief that Wilkins did not adhere to his prescribed rehabilitation regimen. This could potentially mitigate $8 million in 2025 salary obligations and a further $25.25 million in 2026 salary obligations. However, it’s clear that any attempt to invalidate his guarantees would likely trigger a legal dispute over the legitimacy of such actions.
