Rampage Jackson: PRIDE forced 30-pound cut in 3 hours for Sakuraba fight

Prominent mixed martial artist Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson recounted an extraordinary anecdote concerning the preparations for one of his famous bouts in the PRIDE organization.

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, a past titleholder in the UFC’s light heavyweight division, delivered numerous unforgettable confrontations throughout his distinguished professional journey. Prior to joining the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Jackson had already established himself as a recognized figure in competitive fighting within PRIDE, overcoming opponents such as Kevin Randleman and Chuck Liddell before his debut inside the Octagon.

For his initial appearance in PRIDE, Jackson faced an immense challenge, going head-to-head with the celebrated Japanese fighter Kazushi Sakuraba at PRIDE 15 in July 2001. This match materialized following Jackson’s impressive record of 10 victories in his initial 11 professional contests, occurring during a period when Sakuraba was considered a preeminent force in Mixed Martial Arts, having previously dominated three key figures from the Gracie lineage.

Leading up to his encounter with Sakuraba, Jackson found himself under the most intense scrutiny of his career to date. However, the most formidable obstacle Jackson encountered emerged just hours before his confrontation with the formidable Japanese combatant.

Quinton Jackson: Allegations of PRIDE attempting to ‘sabotage’ him before Kazushi Sakuraba bout

During a recent guest spot on the Coach Tim Welch’s Red Hawk Recap podcast, Jackson recounted an astonishing narrative concerning the most arduous weight reduction he experienced in his mixed martial arts tenure.

Jackson stated that his most challenging weight reduction occurred before his match against Sakuraba, explaining that despite the absence of formal weight divisions, organizers insisted he shed 27 pounds within a three-hour timeframe.

He elaborated that the organization desired this drastic weight loss on the actual day of the contest, a tactic he believed was intended to significantly weaken him. Jackson openly expressed his strong disapproval of PRIDE FC due to their conduct towards him, conveying a suspicion that he might have been deliberately poisoned. He suggested that considering Sakuraba’s stature within PRIDE at that time, his belief was plausible. Jackson recalled experiencing severe stomach discomfort after consuming substances provided for weight reduction, noting that immediately following his bout with Sakuraba, once back in the changing room, a significant bowel movement resolved his symptoms entirely. He characterized the individuals managing him, with whom his own manager interacted, as malevolent figures, likening them to “chemists” or strategic operators within PRIDE.

Jackson further asserted that these individuals harbored intense animosity towards him. He recounted that during the Sakuraba fight, he was experiencing severe jet lag and was more preoccupied with avoiding an embarrassing accident than with preventing an armbar submission. He viewed his ability to even participate in the fight as miraculous, having had to feign complete dehydration. After shedding 27 pounds, he expressed a strong reluctance to continue the weight-cutting process. He posed the question of how daunting it would be to lose such a substantial amount of weight in merely three hours, humorously adding that he instructed them to transport him to the weigh-in scale, marking the commencement of his “acting career.”

Ultimately, Jackson succumbed to Sakuraba via submission, marking only the second loss in his professional record up to that time. Subsequently, in 2007, the PRIDE organization was purchased and subsequently dissolved by Zuffa, under the leadership of Dana White and the Fertitta brothers.
