Marcus Semien experienced contrasting fortunes during Saturday’s game.
The unfortunate incident occurred early, in the third inning, when the Texas Rangers’ second baseman was struck on the head by a 94.6 mph fastball thrown by Atlanta Braves’ starting pitcher Grant Holmes. The baseball seemed to make contact with his helmet before hitting his face, causing him visible discomfort as the team’s medical staff rushed to his aid.
Semien chose to continue playing and subsequently scored a run on an RBI single from Adolis García.
That run proved significant, as the contest extended into extra innings.
Following a scoreless top of the 10th inning by the Braves, Semien delivered a game-winning single, securing a 6-5 victory.
Semien’s season hasn’t been stellar, with a .226/.306/.363 batting line, 13 home runs, and nine stolen bases in 434 plate appearances, but his defensive skills and experience make him a valuable asset. He also demonstrated his ability to come through in crucial moments.
The Rangers’ victory improved their record to 55-50, placing them just a half-game behind the final AL wild-card spot. Their actions at the MLB trade deadline are yet to be determined.
