Raphinha communicated to ESPN that he entertained thoughts of departing Barcelona for a substantial financial opportunity in Saudi Arabia prior to Hansi Flick’s appointment in 2024.
The Brazilian national player, having recently renewed his agreement until 2028 this summer, perceived a widespread desire for his departure following his initial two seasons at the club. However, Flick, who succeeded Xavi Hernández, successfully persuaded him to remain.
The German manager designated Raphinha as a pivotal element within his squad, positioning him on the left flank of the offensive line. The former Leeds United player responded positively, contributing 34 goals and 26 assists across 57 matches as Barça secured victories in LaLiga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Supercopa.
“I have been actively involved in football since the age of 15, experiencing both favorable and challenging periods throughout my journey. Consequently, I reached a stage where I deemed it necessary to prioritize my well-being and that of my family,” Raphinha conveyed to ESPN.
“The proposition presented by Saudi Arabia held considerable allure for me. It possessed the capacity to positively transform not only my personal circumstances but also the lives of my parents, my child, and numerous others.
“Undoubtedly, we deliberated on the prospect of leaving [Barcelona]. I contemplated that the moment for departure might have arrived, but subsequent discussions with [Flick], initially via telephone and subsequently at the commencement of the preseason, ultimately led him to persuade me to remain. I am appreciative that he did so.”
Raphinha expressed his sentiments at the time regarding the perceived lack of respect directed towards him during that summer period, with reports concerning Barça’s interest in Athletic Club winger Nico Williams particularly causing him irritation.
He stated that he was particularly affected when a photograph depicting a supporter donning a Williams jersey bearing his No. 11 on the reverse gained widespread attention, and he continues to harbor the impression that numerous individuals would have welcomed his departure.
“Numerous individuals [desired my exit],” he remarked. “It is impractical to enumerate them comprehensively. Abruptly, I was not performing in accordance with their expectations, or fulfilling what they deemed necessary.
“However, I have consistently maintained a clear conscience regarding my capabilities. I exhibited unwavering dedication. Perhaps they anticipated 30 goals per season, which is not inherently aligned with my style. I am not a striker; I am a player who contributes significantly through commitment, unwavering dedication, and diligent effort – that is Raphinha. I will consistently exert my utmost effort.
“Consequently, owing to my divergence from their envisioned player profile, numerous individuals advocated for my departure, perceiving a lack of future prospects for me within the club.
“I possess self-awareness, encompassing my accomplishments, experiences, and journey to this juncture. The opinions of those unfamiliar with me, or lacking comprehensive knowledge of my experiences, will not influence my mental state.”
His overall tally of 34 goals across all competitions in the preceding year substantially surpassed the 20 goals he accumulated during his initial two seasons at the club combined.
Thus far in the current season, he has successfully scored three goals in seven appearances, although he has been absent from Barça’s most recent three matches due to a thigh injury.
Sources have indicated to ESPN that his participation in Saturday’s match against Girona is improbable, but he is anticipated to be available for the Clásico encounter against Real Madrid on Oct. 26.
Raphinha’s presence in that particular match will offer a much-needed boost for Barça, who have experienced injuries to Robert Lewandowski and Dani Olmo this week.
