Once more, the Boston Red Sox triumphed over the New York Yankees on Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox secured their eighth straight victory against their rivals (BOS 12, NYY 1), marking their first such streak in a single season since 2009. This achievement represents only Boston’s third instance of winning eight consecutive games against the Yankees in their storied history.
“Losing to them isn’t something I enjoy,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed to reporters, including the New York Post, after Friday’s defeat. “I dislike losing to anyone, frankly. They’ve consistently outperformed us lately.”
Saturday’s contest remained relatively close until the Red Sox exploded for seven runs in the ninth inning, sealing their victory. Ace left-hander Garrett Crochet dominated the Yankees, recording 11 strikeouts in seven innings while allowing only one run. David Hamilton, Carlos Narváez, and Trevor Story each contributed three hits for the Red Sox.
The Yankees’ sole run over the past two games came from a Giancarlo Stanton solo home run. During the eight-game losing streak, the Red Sox have outscored them 48-21, and the margin is even wider at 25-7 over the last five games. The Yankees are currently 1-8 against Boston this season and hold a 4-15 record against the Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays, the two teams ahead of them in the AL East standings.
Here is a chronological list of Boston’s three eight-game winning streaks against New York:
- 9 games: Sept. 28, 2008 to June 11, 2009
- 8 games: Sept. 20, 2000 to July 16, 2021
- 8 games: June 25, 2025 to present (active streak)
The Red Sox previously achieved a 17-game winning streak against New York from 1911 to 1912, although the Yankees were then known as the New York Highlanders. The Highlanders rebranded as the Yankees in 1913.
With Saturday’s win, the Red Sox improved their season record to 71-59. They now hold a 1 ½ game advantage over the Yankees for the leading wild card position, effectively 2 ½ games due to winning the season series and possessing the tiebreaker. The AL East title remains within reach for the Red Sox, as they trail Toronto by 4 ½ games in the division race.
Despite the unfavorable head-to-head results against the Red Sox, the Yankees maintain a 69-60 record for the season and occupy a comfortable wild card spot. They have a three-game cushion over the Kansas City Royals for a playoff berth and also control the tiebreaker, effectively granting them a four-game lead.
The Yankees and Red Sox will conclude their four-game series Sunday night in the Bronx. Right-hander Dustin May (7-9, 4.59 ERA) and Carlos Rodón (13-7, 3.24 ERA) are scheduled to pitch. The season series will conclude with three games at Fenway Park from September 12-14.
