On Saturday, Rory McIlroy pulled out of the 2026 Arnold Palmer Invitational prior to beginning his third round. McIlroy, having achieved a 4-under 68 score on Friday which placed him among the top 10 competitors, stated a back issue as the cause for his withdrawal.

Upon reaching the golf course for his pre-round practice session that Saturday, McIlroy experienced a sense of unease in his back during his warm-up at the driving range. His withdrawal occurred approximately thirty minutes before his scheduled tee-off at 12:55 p.m. ET.

McIlroy issued a statement, conveying, “During my morning workout at the gym, I sensed a minor catch in my back. Once I commenced striking golf balls on the practice range ahead of the round, the sensation deteriorated, culminating in muscle cramps in my lumbar spine. Sadly, I am unable to proceed and must pull out. I was genuinely keen to participate in this weekend’s play. I hope the Arnold Palmer Invitational concludes successfully and I aim to return next year.”

The golfer, currently ranked second globally, informed Golf Channel that, while he might have been able to endure the injury, he judged that “the potential benefits did not outweigh the hazards” of playing with spasms, especially with major events such as The Players tournament scheduled for the following week and the Masters occurring within the month, where he holds the title in both. Consequently, he chose to rest and undergo therapy with the aim of being prepared for TPC Sawgrass in the upcoming week.

This incident represents the initial occasion in over a decade that McIlroy has retired from a tournament mid-event, with his previous instance being at the Honda Classic in 2013.

Whenever a golf professional experiences back soreness or an ache, it naturally prompts heightened worry. Given that McIlroy was nine strokes behind before the commencement of Saturday’s third round, the individual who has achieved a career grand slam evidently concluded that persevering through the pain carried too great a risk of exacerbating his condition.

McIlroy had already made arrangements to have Monday as a day off and intended to reach The Players tournament on Tuesday, with his pre-competition media briefing slated for 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
