Roy Jones Jr. to Train Errol Spence Jr.: Can He Revive “The Truth”?

Word is spreading that Roy Jones Jr. is scheduled to head to Dallas, Texas, to assist Errol Spence Jr. in preparing for a potential return to the ring. He made it known today that his objective is to assist the former IBF, WBA, and WBC welterweight titleholder Spence (28-1, 22 KOs), who has been on hiatus, “get back in action” to assess his current capabilities.

The Start of a Calm Resurgence

Jones Jr. didn’t specify whether Spence had communicated his intentions regarding future fights. However, there’s speculation that he might be contemplating a matchup against WBC interim junior middleweight titleholder Vergil Jr. after mentioning the latter’s name the previous Saturday night.

Errol was present at Ortiz Jr’s contest against Erickson Lubin on November 8, 2025, held at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. He witnessed Vergil Jr’s triumph over Lubin via a second-round knockout and undoubtedly took note of the substantial audience and vibrant setting.

Spence, aged 35, has been inactive since his defeat to Terence Crawford on July 29, 2023. This loss was undoubtedly a difficult experience for the 2008 U.S Olympian, as he was knocked out in the ninth round of that bout.

“We intend to arrive at a thoughtful decision. If he feels capable, I’m confident he will proceed. He wouldn’t have attended the arena if he weren’t considering it,” Roy Jones Jr. shared with All The Smoke, expressing his conviction that Errol Spence is contemplating a comeback following his presence at Vergil Ortiz Jr’s fight the previous Saturday night in Fort Worth, Texas.

Should Roy Jr. successfully guide Spence in a comeback against Vergil Ortiz Jr., it would represent a significant achievement for the retired former world champion across four weight divisions. It could serve as a powerful endorsement to attract other fighters to his training.

Is It Possible to Reverse the Course of Time?

It’s challenging to envision Jones Jr. single-handedly revitalizing Spence’s career. Even with access to the most expensive training resources, it won’t erase the passage of time to become the Fountain of Youth that Errol desires. What he genuinely requires is a functional Time Machine capable of retrieving the 2015 version of himself, the youthful 25-year-old prime Spence.

“The atmosphere in the arena was electric. He clearly appreciated the fan support. It was evident that he felt at home, and that brought him immense joy because he was thriving in that environment. That suggests he still possesses the drive and ambition to be back in the spotlight,” Jones Jr. noted.
