Currently ranked eleventh globally, Holger Rune joins the list of prominent tennis players whose season has concluded earlier than anticipated due to an injury sustained at the Nordic Open held in Stockholm.
The 22-year-old Danish athlete, who was on track to regain his position within the top 10 following his semi-final appearance at the ATP 250 tournament, was compelled to withdraw from his match despite holding a one-set lead against French player Ugo Humbert.
Aneke Rune, his mother, subsequently informed the Danish newspaper BT that medical professionals had indicated to her the injury suffered by her son was “very serious.”
She stated, “They are quite certain that it involves a ruptured Achilles tendon, which is obviously very concerning. Holger is, understandably, extremely upset.”
“They have said that they can identify it visually.”
Rune, who had been managing a hamstring issue leading up to the match, seemed to immediately grasp the seriousness of his injury and displayed emotion as he received medical attention after limping towards his seat.
He experienced a sharp pain after leaping to strike a ball at the back of the court, with the score tied at 40-40 during Humbert’s serve, while Rune was ahead with a score of 6-4, 2-2.
Humbert commented, “This wasn’t the manner in which I hoped to secure a victory. I am deeply saddened for Holger, and I hope he recovers quickly.
“I am wishing him a swift recovery. It was a competitive match; he was performing slightly better than I was, but I sincerely regret what happened to Holger.”
Later on Saturday, Novak Djokovic retired after conceding the initial set of his third-place match against Taylor Fritz at the Six Kings Slam held in Saudi Arabia.
This follows Djokovic’s struggles with injuries and illness, preceding his unexpected defeat to qualifier Valentin Vacherot at the Shanghai Masters the previous week.
