Ryder Cup: Europe Leads After Day 1 – Live Updates

The biennial golf contest is underway … and the squad from Europe has continued their strong showing from the competition held a couple years back in Italy.

Following Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas securing victory on the initial hole, the European team seized command for the majority of the foursomes matches, achieving clear victories in three contests to establish an early 3-0 advantage. Only Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele managed to secure a point for the USA.

After the initial session, the European team held a 3-1 lead.

The afternoon four-ball format proved more favorable for the American players, with Justin Thomas and Cameron Young establishing a strong start with a decisive 6&5 triumph over Ludvig Åberg and Rasmus Højgaard. However, the European team sustained their momentum, propelled by the excellent performance of Tommy Fleetwood and the brilliance of Jon Rahm.

Europe secured a 2.5-1.5 victory in the afternoon session, extending their lead to 5.5-2.5 as they advanced to Saturday’s play.

Bethpage Black is serving as the venue for the competition for the first occasion, and ticket prices have been notably high. Former President Donald Trump is present to witness the matches on Friday afternoon, which has resulted in heightened security measures at the renowned Long Island golf course.
