Aryna Sabalenka orchestrated a turnaround victory over Laura Siegemund, averting elimination and advancing to the semifinals at Wimbledon. The pair faced off at center court on Tuesday morning, where Siegemund aimed to achieve another surprising triumph after her third-round victory over Madison Keys.
After conceding the initial set with a score of 6-4, the top-seeded Sabalenka mounted a comeback to claim the subsequent two sets and win the match. Sabalenka emphatically secured the second set, 6-2, setting the stage for an electrifying third set.
Sabalenka found herself trailing 3-1, before leveling the set at 3-3, initiating a sequence of exchanges that would determine the victor. Siegemund surged ahead with a 4-3 lead but was swiftly countered by Sabalenka, who seized the set and the match in successive games, 6-4.
Prior to her exit from the competition, Siegemund had achieved victories against Peyton Stearns, Leylah Fernandez, and Keys.
The Belarussian competitor had maintained a streak of not dropping a set until encountering Siegemund in the tournament. Sabalenka had recorded triumphs over Carson Branstine, Marie Bouzková, Emma Raducanu, and Elise Mertens in the preceding four rounds.
Sabalenka is slated to confront No. 13 Amanda Anisimova on Thursday in the semifinal showdown.
Sabalenka will aim to clinch her 21st career singles title and her inaugural one at Wimbledon. The three-time Grand Slam victor has not secured a win since the Madrid Open in May.
In the interim, Sabalenka experienced a quarterfinal defeat at the Italian Open against Zheng Qinwen, conceded the final at Roland-Garros to Coco Gauff, and suffered a semifinal loss at the Berlin Open to Marketa Vondrousova.
The world No. 1’s most recent Grand Slam victory occurred at the 2024 US Open, where she triumphed over Jessica Pegula to seize the title.
