The gridiron journey for Missouri’s signal-caller, Sam Horn, in 2025 was abruptly curtailed following a single play.
Horn sustained a fractured right tibia during the initial play of the campaign and, as reported by ESPN, will be sidelined for the remainder of the year after undergoing a surgical procedure on Wednesday. Horn had been vying with Penn State transfer Beau Pribula for the role of starting quarterback for No. 25 Missouri. Coach Eli Drinkwitz had envisioned a scenario where the two would share snaps in the team’s triumph over Central Arkansas.
Instead, Pribula assumed the majority of offensive plays as Horn suffered a blow to his right leg while carrying the ball on the opening play. Horn was unable to resume playing in the game and was observed on the sidelines during the second half, utilizing crutches and sporting a substantial brace on his right leg.
Horn has participated in two sports at Missouri and was selected in the 17th round of the 2025 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He finalized an agreement with the Dodgers in late July, with the intention of participating in football in 2025.
The redshirt junior possesses a fastball capable of reaching 98 MPH and was drafted by the Dodgers despite having pitched only 15 innings during his collegiate career. Horn was absent from the 2024 college football season after undergoing Tommy John surgery preceding the 2024 baseball season.
He rejoined the baseball team in 2025 and accumulated 10.2 innings. Horn conceded seven hits and allowed five earned runs, with eight walks and 14 strikeouts.
With Horn unavailable for the duration of the season, Missouri’s backup quarterback is true freshman Matt Zollers. Pribula has distinguished himself through the Tigers’ initial two games of the season, completing 79% of his passes for 617 yards and amassing seven total touchdowns.
