A former competitor in Formula 1, Logan Sargeant, will surprisingly participate again in prototype racing through the IMSA SportsCar Championship. This development occurs approximately half a year following an unexplained departure from IDEC Sport Racing and the Hyundai Genesis team.
The 24-year-old, who is an American citizen, is scheduled to compete in the last two endurance competitions of the season with PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports, operating the #52 Oreca 07-Gibson.
His planned engagements encompass the six-hour competition held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on September 21 and the ten-hour Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, which concludes the season on October 11.

This decision presents a notable contrast to the publicly announced statement issued by IDEC Sport Racing in February. The European Le Mans Series LMP2 organization indicated at the time that Sargeant would be discontinuing his involvement in the sport to explore other avenues. His renewed participation distinctly demonstrates that he had not concluded his racing endeavors, after all.
Just this past Wednesday, Sargeant was declared as a new member of the management group led by Oliver Gavin, a former victor at Le Mans – a further indication suggesting that his return might be integrated into a more extensive, long-term strategy.
At PR1 Mathiasen, Sargeant is expected to collaborate with Benjamin Pedersen, who previously participated in IndyCar, along with Naveen Rao, a driver with a Bronze rating as required by the class.
“I am extremely enthusiastic about getting back into a race car for IMSA’s concluding two LMP2 races with PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports,” Sargeant stated.
“It is an excellent chance to compete at two particularly noteworthy circuits, Indianapolis and Road Atlanta, and to support efforts to achieve favorable results alongside my teammates, Ben and Naveen.”
“I am keen to contribute to the team’s accomplishments in the upcoming races and impart my knowledge and experiences to all those participating. I anticipate seeing everyone at the track.”

Team leader Bobby Oergel conveyed his enthusiasm regarding the acquisition, stating, “Myself, along with every member of the PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports crew, are extremely pleased that Logan can join us for the closing two endurance events of the current season.”
“I am confident that Logan’s performance level will be outstanding, and everyone will collaborate effectively. We sincerely wish to integrate him into our team efficiently and smoothly. The prospect of conducting preliminary testing prior to the Indy event should facilitate exactly that.”
Sargeant’s journey to IMSA encompassed securing a world karting title, attaining several podium placements in FIA Formula 3, and achieving fourth place in FIA Formula 2. This accomplishment led to his involvement with Williams in Formula 1 for the seasons of 2023 and 2024. During his inaugural season, he marked history as the first American in three decades to gain a championship point, which he accomplished at the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin.
However, his aggregate performance did not meet anticipated levels, resulting in his replacement following the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix held in Zandvoort. Shortly afterward, he entered the Hypercar initiative by Genesis Magma Racing, partnering with Andre Lotterer and Pipo Derani, until his unforeseen departure this year in February.
