Schottenheimer Expects Parsons to Play Despite Trade Rumors

Even with limited public updates, Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is optimistic that All-Pro linebacker Micah Parsons will be present for their opening game in just a few weeks.

Whether that suggests Parsons and the Cowboys have finalized a fresh agreement, however, remains uncertain.

“I’m optimistic about that, yes,” Schottenheimer commented on Wednesday when questioned about Parsons’ availability for Week 1, according to The Dallas Morning News’ Calvin Watkins.

“I’m optimistic that Micah will be participating against the Philadelphia Eagles.”

Parsons is in the fifth-year option phase of his initial contract, which is scheduled to compensate him around $24 million this season. He has undeniably established himself as one of the premier defensive talents in the league. He recorded 12 sacks and 43 total tackles in 13 games last season while managing an ankle ailment.

Despite having a considerable period, Parsons and the Cowboys didn’t achieve a contract extension during the offseason. This prompted Parsons to request a trade early in training camp, an action that owner Jerry Jones indicated he doesn’t intend to approve. Parsons has been with the Cowboys throughout the entire preseason, but his participation has been restricted partially due to a back issue.

Jones and the Cowboys don’t seem to be progressing toward a new agreement, either. As per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the situation has become “personal” with both parties “entrenched.”

“I’m not sure if discussions will necessarily accelerate, but we have a game approaching, and he’s bound by contract,” Jones remarked last week as the team concluded its California phase of training camp.

There is still ample time before the Cowboys compete against the Eagles on Sept. 4. Jones, who has encountered this scenario numerous times during his tenure with the franchise, could potentially reach a reconciliation with Parsons and negotiate a fresh agreement.

But as of now, with negotiations pending, both Jones and Schottenheimer share a consistent perspective. They anticipate Parsons to be on the field in Week 1.
