The Philadelphia Phillies’ Kyle Schwarber achieved a significant milestone on Thursday night against the Atlanta Braves (PHI 19, ATL 4), matching a Major League Baseball record by hitting four home runs in a single game. This accomplishment places him as the 21st player in MLB history to achieve this feat, and the third during the 2025 season. Previously, Nick Kurtz, a rookie for the Athletics, hit four home runs against the Astros on July 25, and Eugenio Suárez, then with the Diamondbacks, accomplished the same against the Braves on April 26 of this year. Before these performances, no player had achieved four home runs in a single game since J.D. Martinez in 2017.
Below is a clip of Schwarber’s seventh-inning home run that made history:
Here’s another view of the historic moment:
Schwarber is the fourth player from the Phillies to hit four home runs in a game, and the first since Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt in 1976. Before Schmidt, Chuck Klein of the Phillies had a four-homer game in 1936, and Ed Delahanty achieved the same in 1896. The Phillies now stand as the first franchise to have four different players each achieve a four-homer game.
Schwarber’s initial home run occurred in the first inning, a 450-foot hit against Cal Quantrill. He then hit another in the fourth against Austin Cox, a left-handed relief pitcher. His third home run came in the fifth, again off Cox, giving Schwarber a total of 19 home runs against left-handed pitchers this season.
In the eighth inning, Schwarber had an additional opportunity to hit his fifth home run of the game, facing Braves utility player Vidal Bruján, who was pitching. However, Schwarber popped up a 57.4-mph breaking ball from Bruján.
Despite not hitting a fifth home run, the crowd at Citizens Bank Park showed their appreciation as he returned to the dugout:
He is now the fourth player in MLB history to record four home runs and at least nine RBI in one game. These nine RBI also represent a Phillies franchise record for a single game. As a result of his performance, Schwarber’s season stats are now .248/.370/.586, potentially placing him in consideration for the NL MVP award in what is his contract year. Prior to Thursday’s game, Schwarber was tied with Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers for the lead in the National League with 45 home runs. He currently has 49, trailing Cal Raleigh by one for the MLB lead.
The victory was particularly important for the Phillies, who are in first place, especially after recently being swept in a three-game series by the Mets.
