Jannik Sinner secured his 29th and 30th consecutive sets in ATP Masters 1,000 tournaments, comfortably defeating American Frances Tiafoe to advance to the Miami Open semi-finals.
The Italian player, ranked second globally, who surpassed Novak Djokovic’s decade-old record of 24 consecutive set wins earlier in the week, maintained his advantage after securing an early break against Tiafoe in the initial game, concluding the match with a 6-2, 6-2 victory in 71 minutes.
The player ranked 20th worldwide found himself unable to counter Sinner’s commanding performance, as Sinner conceded merely nine points on his serve throughout both sets.
Sinner, a four-time Grand Slam champion, is set to compete against either Germany’s world number four Alexander Zverev or Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo in the penultimate round.
“I believe my serving was quite effective during crucial junctures,” Sinner remarked during an interview on Sky Sports.
“I suspected he might be somewhat fatigued due to several demanding three-set encounters he’s had here, so I aimed to make the start of the match physically challenging, which certainly proved beneficial,” he added.
The remaining semi-final match will feature Arthur Fils from France squaring off against Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic.
Sinner aspires to be the inaugural male player since Roger Federer in 2017 to achieve the prestigious ‘Sunshine Double,’ by triumphing at both Indian Wells and the Miami Open within the same calendar year.
The twenty-four-year-old has now advanced to the semi-finals in four out of his five participations in the Miami Open and secured victory in the 2024 edition of the tournament.
