Top-ranked Jannik Sinner has pulled out of the upcoming Cincinnati Open due to a knee issue, though he remains hopeful of recovering in time for the US Open at the end of the month.
The 24-year-old from Italy claimed his fifth major singles crown by defeating Alexander Zverev in last month’s Wimbledon final, but has been sidelined ever since.
“Following discussions with my medical staff and coaches, I regret to share that I must pull out of the Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati,” Sinner stated.
“I have been experiencing issues with my right knee, and despite the diligent efforts of my medical team, I must face the reality that I am not yet fit to play.
“Missing the Cincinnati tournament is a huge disappointment for me. I look forward to returning next season, and my immediate priority is preparing for the US Open.”
The main draw for the Cincinnati Open is scheduled to start on 13 August, culminating in the final on 23 August, with Zverev and 24-time major winner Novak Djokovic set to participate.
Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz secured the 2025 title, having established a 5-0 lead in the final match before Sinner was forced to withdraw due to sickness.
However, the 23-year-old world number two will be unable to defend his crown, having been out of action since April’s Barcelona Open due to a wrist issue.
The US Open, marking the final Grand Slam of the season, is set to run in New York from 30 August until 13 September.
