Sinner Upsets Djokovic, Alcaraz Beats Fritz; Wimbledon Final Set

The top-ranked tennis player, Jannik Sinner, and the world’s second-ranked player, Carlos Alcaraz, are set to compete for the 2025 Wimbledon men’s singles title after securing victories in their respective semifinal matches on Friday.

Sinner defeated Djokovic in three straight sets with scores of 6-3, 6-3, 6-4, highlighting the dominant nature of the match. Prior to Friday’s competition, doubts emerged regarding Djokovic’s physical condition, following a fall during his quarterfinal match against Flavio Cobelli on Wednesday. The concerns increased as Djokovic canceled his Thursday practice session.

Those concerns were substantiated as Djokovic exhibited difficulty with lateral movement throughout the game. He especially struggled to move towards his right, showed problems pushing off for returns and had a visible limp between plays.

Djokovic appeared improved after a medical timeout taken between the second and third sets and even surged to a 3-0 lead. However, Sinner maintained his composure, eventually breaking Djokovic’s serve and regaining control of the match against a visibly hampered opponent. On several instances, Djokovic was unable to even attempt reaching Sinner’s returns, particularly when a change of direction was required.

Carlos Alcaraz aiming for a three-peat Wimbledon championship

During the earlier semifinal, Fritz presented a formidable challenge. The American athlete performed arguably the best match in his career, consistently overwhelming Alcaraz with powerful serves. Nevertheless, when Fritz wasn’t dictating the match through his serves, Alcaraz demonstrated the ability to fight back and hold his ground.

The current titleholder confounded Fritz with diverse shot selections, skillfully employing drop shots at the net and executing sliced backhands down the line, often catching his adversary off guard. Fritz managed to force a tiebreaker in the final set; however, Alcaraz remained steadfast and unshaken. As he consistently showcases, he possesses the capacity to elevate his performance level when necessary, while his opponent encounters their limitations.

Alcaraz eventually overcame Fritz with a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(6), thus advancing to the Wimbledon final for the third consecutive year. Alcaraz has secured victory in the tournament for the past two years and now aims to clinch a third consecutive Wimbledon title this Sunday against Sinner.
