Following triumphs in their respective Cincinnati Open semi-finals, both achieved in straight sets, Jannik Sinner is set to face Carlos Alcaraz in a championship match for the fourth instance this season.
The current titleholder, Sinner, celebrating his 24th year, secured a 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 victory over Terence Atmane without conceding a single break point.
Alcaraz prevailed with a 6-4 6-3 score against Alexander Zverev, who visibly struggled due to the intense heat and humidity.
This season, the Spaniard has emerged victorious in two of their three previous final encounters, namely in Rome and at Roland Garros, while Sinner claimed victory at Wimbledon in July.
Alcaraz narrowly clinched the first set against Zverev, managing a single break of the German’s serve and successfully defending against three break point attempts.
Zverev’s physical condition deteriorated noticeably in the second set, prompting him to request a medical timeout after just three games.
Upon his return, the 28-year-old, who had previously experienced breathing difficulties during his quarter-final victory over Ben Shelton, exhibited limited mobility on the court.
Despite completing the match, his movements were significantly hampered, allowing Alcaraz to secure the final 12 points and claim the win.
“Playing against an opponent who is clearly not at their best is always a difficult situation. It’s especially challenging when it’s Sascha, a remarkable player and a great person off the court. We share a strong bond,” Alcaraz commented.
“We began strongly with impressive rallies and a high level of play. But then, he suddenly felt unwell, and my focus shifted more towards his well-being than playing my best tennis.
“It was a tough situation, and I extend my best wishes to him.”
Reflecting on his upcoming clash with Sinner, Alcaraz remarked: “We consistently showcase our finest tennis when we play each other. We push each other to elevate our game. I’m prepared for the challenge ahead.
“I intend to refine my strategy and rectify the errors I made in our previous encounter. I aim to be fully prepared, both physically and mentally. I’m excited for Monday.”
