Spieth on Injury, Open Championship Status After Withdrawal

As the British Open commences on July 17, the 2017 champion Jordan Spieth will be one of the contestants vying for possession of the highly prized Claret Jug. Spieth, who recently was compelled to withdraw from the Travelers Championship as a result of an ailment, has verified his participation in the concluding major competition of the 2025 season.

The 31-year-old, three-time major victor stated that he is in good physical condition while elaborating on the ailment that precipitated the initial withdrawal of his career in 297 PGA Tour appearances. Spieth had earlier conveyed that he awoke experiencing discomfort in his neck on the morning of the opening day of the Travelers Championship. He made an attempt to continue playing despite the discomfort but ultimately withdrew after executing his tee shot on the 13th hole.

“It was an unusual neck spasm phenomenon that simply arose, and I found myself unable to complete the round,” Spieth expressed on “Up & Adams.” “It was an odd occurrence. I am fortunate to have a proficient team collaborating with me. I was cognizant that it would be transient, and it only persisted for a matter of days.

“I have since regained my complete physical capabilities, preparing for the British Open next week, which is the final major of our season, and subsequently, we have our playoffs. Therefore, numerous significant events remain, but indeed, I have no limitations, which is advantageous.”

Ailments have afflicted the globe’s former No. 1 ranked golfer for the preceding several years. In the latter portion of the previous summer, Spieth underwent a surgical procedure to resolve a persistent wrist ailment that initially commenced troubling him in 2017.

With that ailment ultimately resolved, Spieth had been savoring a stable season prior to his WD at the Travelers. Of his 16 participations this season, he has concluded in the top-20 on seven occasions. He also possesses two top-five conclusions that encompass his fourth-place conclusion at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson, an occasion that was triumphed over by fellow Texan Scottie Scheffler.

Spieth, who persists in the pursuit of his initial major since he secured victory at the British Open eight years ago, concluded T14 at the Masters, failed to make the cut at the PGA Championship, and T23 at the U.S. Open.

Spieth’s arrival at the British Open may be postponed as he and his spouse Annie are anticipating the arrival of their offspring imminently.

“I will be a somewhat delayed arrival, but I will be present,” Spieth stated. “Fortunately, I have participated in the British Open at this course in Northern Ireland six years ago, so I will not feel compelled to familiarize myself with a novel location. Indeed, I am endeavoring to complete all the preparations prior to the arrival of the infant, ensuring that everyone is in good health, and subsequently, I shall proceed overseas.”

Spieth alluded to this being the second instance in which he will participate in the British Open at Royal Potrush. The preceding occasion on which the British Open was conducted here (in 2019), Spieth concluded T20 behind victor Shane Lowry.
