The Springbok national team’s coach, Rassie Erasmus, is currently awaiting updates on Damian Willemse’s condition. The concern arises after the talented Stormers player sustained a hamstring injury during their recent match against Benetton in Treviso, which they won 31–16 on Saturday.
Following the game, Stormers’ Director of Rugby, John Dobson, acknowledged that Willemse had incurred the injury but opted to continue playing.
Dobson stated, “It appears Damian has strained his hamstring. He was strategically moved to the wing, a decision I found quite astute on Ruhan [Nel]’s part, minimizing his defensive responsibilities. This really underscores his dedication.
“This injury might jeopardize his participation in the upcoming tour. He was determined to stay on the field and continue playing for the Stormers, which was truly commendable.”
Willemse’s injury occurs just days before South Africa embarks on a five-game tour, commencing with their match against Japan in Tokyo on November 1. The versatile 26-year-old has been a consistent presence in Erasmus’s squad, demonstrating his ability to play in multiple positions, including fullback, fly-half, and centre.
In other news, Dobson expressed immense satisfaction with his team’s performance, having concluded their European tour without a loss, securing victories against the Ospreys, Glasgow Warriors, and Benetton.
He remarked, “This victory holds significant importance for us. We had never won here [in Treviso], and it was an exceptionally challenging match. They fielded a team packed with international players. The first half presented unique tactical challenges compared to the previous four rounds.”
The Stormers’ leader emphasized the crucial role played by the players coming off the bench in achieving their undefeated streak.
Dobson further commented, “To complete a tour without a defeat, especially for a team that struggles with travel, is an extraordinary achievement by an exceptional group. The impact from the substitutes was remarkable. Zach [Porthen], Adre [Smith], Ruben [van Heerden], and Ruan [Ackermann] – they have been instrumental in every game. The fresh forwards entering the game from the bench have consistently made a substantial difference.
“Cobus Reinach is undoubtedly an exceptional player. I was particularly impressed with Jurie Matthee’s performance as the game manager. We were considering our options without Manie [Libbok] and Sacha [Feinberg-Mngomezulu], and we have a highly skilled and talented young player capable of leading the team.”
