Steelers’ DK Metcalf suspended 2 games for swinging at Lions fans during Week 16 win

The National Football League announced on Monday that DK Metcalf, a wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, received a two-game suspension after a confrontation with a spectator on the sidelines during the team’s 29-24 victory against the Detroit Lions in Week 16.

Consequently, Metcalf is set to miss the last two regular-season contests. It is anticipated that he will challenge the ruling.

“The league’s policy dictates that ‘players are prohibited from entering spectator areas or engaging with fans at any point during game day, and… if a player initiates unprovoked physical contact with a fan that amounts to unsportsmanlike behavior or creates crowd management difficulties and/or potential for harm, they will face disciplinary action,’ the NFL stated in a partial release.”

Should the ban be maintained, Metcalf stands to lose $277,778 for each game, totaling just over $555,000.

The event unfolded during the second quarter of Sunday’s match held at Ford Field. With the Lions’ offense actively playing, Metcalf moved toward a supporter donning a blue wig who was situated in the front seating area. Following a verbal exchange, Metcalf seemed to deliver a blow towards the fan’s head. It remained undetermined if contact was made.

Although the occurrence was recorded by the television broadcast, game officials did not observe it.

Consequently, Metcalf neither received a penalty nor was he removed from the competition. He concluded the game with four receptions for 42 yards from nine pass attempts.

The matchup concluded in a striking manner, as what appeared to be a game-winning touchdown for the Lions in the final seconds was nullified by a foul. Referees engaged in an extended discussion to resolve the scenario, ultimately leading to the Steelers securing the victory.

The supporter was expelled from the game, according to the Detroit Free Press. The individual alleged Metcalf struck him because he had provoked the receiver by using his complete name, DeKaylin Zecharius.

Conversely, on Monday, sources informed Tom Pelissero from NFL Network that the fan employed offensive language while heckling Metcalf regarding his mother. The same source additionally asserted that the fan referred to Metcalf with “an epithet that is universally understood as unacceptable to use against a Black man.”

Metcalf and the fan reportedly share a past, as the receiver purportedly reported the fan to NFL security services in 2024, during Metcalf’s tenure with the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks had journeyed to Detroit for a Week 4 game against the Lions during the previous season.

On Monday, the legal representative for the fan issued a public statement, asserting that the accusations made against his client, Ryan Kennedy, were “entirely baseless.”

“Ryan Kennedy unequivocally disputes uttering the “N-word,” the “C-word,” or any form of racially charged, misogynistic, or hateful insult throughout the event that transpired on December 21, 2025, at Ford Field during the game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Detroit Lions.”

“These claims lack any foundation in truth.”

Metcalf opted not to address journalists following the match, departing the changing room promptly. When questioned about the occurrence after Sunday’s game, Steelers’ head coach Mike Tomlin indicated he was aware of the confrontation but had not witnessed it. At that point, Tomlin stated he had not yet conversed with Metcalf regarding the matter and would refrain from additional remarks.

Subsequent to the game, the NFL declared its intention to probe the incident. The league was anticipated to render a swift judgment on the circumstances, culminating in Monday’s disclosure.

The Steelers are poised to participate in Sunday’s game against the Browns holding a 9-6 win-loss record. They presently lead the AFC North division, a position they can solidify with a victory against Cleveland. Such an outcome would mark the team’s third consecutive entry into the postseason. Provided Metcalf’s appeal is unsuccessful, he would be available to rejoin the team for their initial playoff match next month.
