The Steelers have once again been tied to a tight end trade target — this time none other than Bears‘ 2020 second-rounder Cole Kmet.
Pittsburgh has been previously linked to Dolphins Pro Bowl TE Jonnu Smith and Falcons TE Kyle Pitts — but CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin recently tied the Steelers to the Kmet route:
“The Bears all but proclaimed a new face of their tight end position by spending a first-round pick on Colston Loveland this year, and while Kmet still has the benefit of legitimate NFL experience, it’s very possible new coach Ben Johnson will lean all the way into Loveland out of the gate. In that case, perhaps the Steelers would be interested in pairing Kmet with Pat Freiermuth, especially if the price is lower than, say, acquiring Kyle Pitts from the Atlanta Falcons.”
In five seasons, Kmet has accumulated 2,592 receiving yards and 19 TDs with the Bears — and while he hasn’t had the same impact as other Steelers trade target tight ends, that could work in the Steel City’s favor.
Reports surfaced that the Steelers were “lowballing” teams during trade talks for pass catchers, and if Pittsburgh truly isn’t trying to spend big on an offensive playmaker, acquiring Kmet at a bargain could be the move to make.
