Iga Swiatek, the reigning champion at Wimbledon, unexpectedly became the latest high-ranking player to be eliminated from the Canadian Open, suffering a defeat at the hands of Clara Tauson in their fourth-round match.
Tauson, representing Denmark and currently ranked 19th, successfully overturned her previous fourth-round defeat to Swiatek at Wimbledon the prior month. She secured a victory over the second-seeded Swiatek in Montreal with a score of 7-6 (7-1) 6-3.
Swiatek’s departure from the tournament follows the earlier exits of top-seeded Coco Gauff, two-time defending champion Jessica Pegula, and fourth-seeded Mirra Andreeva.
“This win is truly amazing and confirms that all the strenuous effort I’ve invested is yielding the desired results,” Tauson expressed. She had previously secured her third WTA title in January, marking her first since 2021.
“I’m gaining increased self-assurance at this competitive level, and I’m beginning to feel more at home here. I believe this significantly helped me in crucial moments today.”
In the quarter-finals, Tauson is slated to compete against Australian Open champion Madison Keys. Keys advanced after saving two match points, ultimately securing a 4-6 6-3 7-5 victory over Czech player Karolina Muchova.
Earlier on Sunday, Naomi Osaka, a four-time major titleholder, dominated her match against Anastasija Sevastova from Latvia, securing a swift 6-1 6-0 victory in just 49 minutes.
Osaka, representing Japan and a two-time champion at both the US and Australian Opens, is currently pursuing her first title since her return from maternity leave in early 2024.
The 27-year-old recently concluded her partnership with coach Patrick Mouratoglou after a period of less than a year. She is now collaborating with Tomasz Wiktorowski from Poland, who previously coached Swiatek.
“I arrived with a well-defined strategy, and fortunately, it played out quite favorably,” commented Osaka, who currently holds the 49th position in the world rankings.
