Sydney Sweeney as Boxer in ‘Christy’: TIFF Premiere

Sydney Sweeney is prepared to showcase her fighting skills in the upcoming movie, Christy, scheduled to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this September.

On Monday, TIFF unveiled an initial image showcasing Sweeney’s physical change into Christy Martin, a former boxing champion. The film is set to premiere at the festival, which will take place from September 4-14. Previously without a title, Christy is now scheduled for its debut, with the official release date still pending.

Sweeney, recognized for her performances in TV shows like Euphoria and movies such as Anyone But You, underwent a major physical change to portray Martin in the biopic. The film chronicles Martin’s life as a champion fighter and the personal tragedy she encountered when her former husband attempted to murder her in 2010.

“My physique went through a complete transformation,” Sweeney mentioned to W magazine regarding the change. “None of my garments fit anymore. Usually, I wear a size 23 in jeans, but I was wearing a size 27. My breasts grew larger. And my backside became substantial. It was shocking! I thought, Oh my goodness! But it felt incredible: I possessed such strength, unbelievably strong.”

David Michod directs the movie, with Ben Foster portraying her husband, James Martin. The supporting cast includes Merritt Weaver, Katy O’Brien, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, Chad L. Coleman, and Tony Cavalero.

Alongside Christy, the much-anticipated biopic The Smashing Machine, which chronicles the life of former UFC and PRIDE fighter Mark Kerr, is also slated to premiere at the same festival this September.

Under the direction of Benny Safdie, the film stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the conflicted former MMA icon, who was widely regarded as one of the most talented athletes to ever enter the fighting world, but his career was plagued with challenges, notably his widely known battle with drug addiction.

Johnson’s co-stars in the movie include Oscar nominee Emily Blunt, with fighters Ryan Bader and Oleksandr Usyk also taking on significant roles.
